TL;DR: In this article, the shape control of a composite beam using surface-bounded piezoelectric actuators has been investigated, and a genetic algorithm is adopted and implemented to optimize the required voltage to maintain the desired shape of the beam.
Abstract: Piezoelectric actuators are effectively used to control the response of light weight structures in shape, vibration and buckling. Optimization for the shape control of piezoelectric beam is the recent challenge which requires proper numerical technique to perform. The shape control of a composite beam using surface-bounded piezoelectric actuators has been investigated in the present work. The mathematical model is developed using two-node Timoshenko beam element coupling with the theory of linear piezoelectricity. First-order shear deformation theory is employed in the formulation to consider the effect of shear. In the analysis, the effect of the actuators position for different set of boundary conditions is investigated. For different boundary conditions which include clamped-free-, clamped–clamped- and simply supported beam, optimisation of piezoelectric patch location is investigated. Moreover, a genetic algorithm is adopted and implemented to optimize the required voltage to maintain the desired shape of the beam. This optimization technique is applied to different cases of composite beams with varying the boundary condition.

TL;DR: In this article, a microstrip fed printed dual-band antenna for Bluetooth (2.4-2.484 GHz) and ultra-wide band (UWB; 3.1-10.6 GHz) applications with wireless local area network (WLAN; 5.15-5.825 GHZ) band-notch characteristics is proposed.
Abstract: In this article, a microstrip fed printed dual band antenna for Bluetooth (2.4–2.484 GHz) and ultra-wide band (UWB; 3.1–10.6 GHz) applications with wireless local area network (WLAN; 5.15–5.825 GHZ) band-notch characteristics is proposed. The desired dual band characteristic is obtained by using a spanner shape monopole with rectangular strip radiating patch, whereas the band-notch characteristics is created by a mushroom-like structure. The Bluetooth and notch bands can easily be controlled by the geometric parameters of the rectangular strip and mushroom structure, respectively. The proposed antenna has been designed, fabricated, and tested. It is found that the proposed antenna yields both the Bluetooth and UWB performance in the frequency regions of 2.438 to 2.495 GHz and 3.10 to 10.66 GHz, respectively for |S11| ≤ −10 dB with an excellent rejection band of 5.14 to 5.823 GHz to prevent WLAN signals. The experimental results provide good agreement with simulated ones. Surface current distributions are used to analyze the effects of the rectangular strip and mushroom. The designed antenna exhibits nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns, stable gain along with almost constant group delay over the desired bands. Hence, the proposed antenna is expected to be suitable for both Bluetooth and UWB applications removing the WLAN band. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE 25:66–74, 2015.

TL;DR: Abrasive hot air jet machining can be applied to various operations such as drilling, surface etching, grooving and micro finishing on the glass and its composites in this article.
Abstract: Abrasive Jet Machining is becoming one of the most prominent machining techniques for glass and other brittle materials. In this article, an attempt has been made to combine abrasive and hot air to form an abrasive hot air jet. Abrasive hot air jet machining can be applied to various operations such as drilling, surface etching, grooving and micro finishing on the glass and its composites. The effect of air temperature on the material removal rate applied to the process of glass etching and grooving is discussed in this article. The roughness of machined surface is also analyzed. It is found that the Material Removal Rate (MRR) increases as the temperature of carrier media (air) is increased. The results have revealed that the roughness of machined surface is reduced by increasing temperature of carrier media. The mechanism of material removal rate has been discussed with aid of SEM micrographs.
