Abstract: Anabaenopsis spp. are heterocytous cyanobacteria commonly found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate water bodies. So far, the knowledge about the phylogeny of this genus is poor. Therefore, we have isolated 15 Anabaenopsis spp. strains from Kenyan and Mexican alkaline and saline water bodies and from a Ugandan freshwater body and studied the morphology and phylogeny in a polyphasic approach. Morphologically, the investigated strains could be discriminated in two groups. One group was containing six Anabaenopsis abijatae and A. cf. abijatae strains with up to more than 500 vegetative cells in one filament, mostly single intercalary heterocyte formation, and the ability to branch out. The other group comprised nine strains of Anabaenopsis elenkinii with short filaments with up to 38 vegetative cells, intercalary heterocytes in pairs, and no ability to branch out. The morphological differences were reflected in the two distinct clusters, which were found in the phylogenetic trees of 16S rDNA and PC-IGS. While the high 16S rDNA similarity values >97.5% found between all investigated A. abijatae and A. elenkinii strains support the assignment of these two species to one single genus, the morphological differences and the low similarity values (<87.3) found in PC-IGS sequences between the two clusters indicate two separate genera. A close morphological and phylogenetic relationship was found for A. abijatae and Anabaenopsis (Cyanospira) rippkae.

Abstract: Gliclazide (GLI), a poorly water-soluble antidiabetic, was transformed into a glassy state by melt quench technique in order to improve its physicochemical properties. Chemical stability of GLI during formation of glass was assessed by monitoring thin-layer chromatography, and an existence of amorphous form was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray powder diffractometry. The glass transition occurred at 67.5°C. The amorphous material thus generated was examined for its in vitro dissolution performance in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8). Surprisingly, amorphous GLI did not perform well and was unable to improve the dissolution characteristics compared to pure drug over entire period of dissolution studies. These unexpected results might be due to the formation of a cohesive supercooled liquid state and structural relaxation of amorphous form toward the supercooled liquid region which indicated functional inability of amorphous GLI from stability point of view. Hence, stabilization of amorphous GLI was attempted by elevation of T(g) via formation of solid dispersion systems involving comprehensive antiplasticizing as well as surface adsorption mechanisms. The binary and ternary amorphous dispersions prepared with polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (as antiplasticizer for elevation of T (g)) and Aerosil 200® and/or Sylysia® 350 (as adsorbent) in the ratio of 1:1:1 (w/w) using kneading and spray-drying techniques demonstrated significant enhancement in rate and extent of dissolution of drug initially. During accelerated stability studies, ternary systems showed no significant reduction in drug dissolution performance over a period of 3 months indicating excellent stabilization of amorphous GLI.

Abstract: Lanthanide-based phosphors have been extensively investigated for their possible applications in solid-state lighting technologies especially for white-light-emitting diodes. In this review article emphasis has been laid on discussing the recent developments of phosphors for warm white-light production based on various optical characteristics such as quantum efficiency, thermal stability, short emission decay time, long-term stability, facile synthesis, and low cost of production. We have tried to cover the essential and latest discoveries of the lanthanide/rare earth-doped phosphors after 2010. New generations of narrow-band phosphors have also been included. The optical and material properties of several novel phosphors and their luminescence characteristics have been thoroughly discussed.

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the seventh-generation coronavirus family causing viral pandemic coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across globe affecting millions of people. The objectives of this study are to (1) identify the major research themes in COVID-19 literature, (2) determine the origin, symptoms and modes of transmission of COVID, (3) recommend the intervention and mitigation strategies adopted by the Governments globally against the spread of COVID-19 and the traumatization among the public? and (4) study the possible drugs/treatment plans against COVID-19. A systematic literature review and comprehensive analysis of 38 research articles on COVID-19 are conducted. An integrated Research focus parallel-ship network and keyword co-occurrence analysis are carried out to visualize the three research concepts in COVID-19 literature. Some of our observations include: (1) as SARS-CoV-2’s RNA matches ~ 96% to SARS-CoV, it is assumed to be transmitted from the bats. (2) The common symptoms are high fever, dry cough, fatigue, sputum production, shortness of breath, diarrhoea etc. (3) A lockdown across 180 affected counties for more than a month with social-distancing and the precautions taken in SARS and MERS are recommended by the Governments. (4) Researchers’ claim that nutrition and immunity enhancers and treatment plans such as arbidol, lopinavir/ritonavir, convalescent plasma and mesenchymal stem cells and drugs including remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin and favipiravir are effective against COVID-19. This complied report serves as guide to help the administrators, researchers and the medical officers to adopt recommended intervention strategies and the optimal treatment/drug against COVID-19.
