Abstract: In 1980 cadmium (Cd) concentrations in digestive gland from American Lobster (Homarus americanus), captured at Belledune Harbour, New Brunswick, Canada were found to range 47.6-372 mg/kg wet weight. Since the digestive gland is commonly eaten the harbor fishery was closed. The adjacent area was decreed a controlled fishery zone. The cadmium source was a lead smelter on the harbor shore. The company installed an aqueous effluent treatment plant and improved handling procedures within the plant area. Aqueous Cd discharges were subsequently reduced by more than 95%. Cadmium levels in lobsters have been monitored annually since 1980 by sampling in early spring, immediately after the lobsters emerged from their overwintering locations. The results from the 1981-1985 monitoring program were used to model the system, analyze the data and predict the years in which certain changes to the management plan might be implemented.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the implications of using the monetary base or bank reserves as an instrument to control a monetary aggregate. Following analysis of a series of theoretical models of increasing complexity, it is concluded that in a system with either institutional or structural lags base control may entail very sharp and possibly undamped oscillations of short-term interest rates. The shorter the time period over which the authorities choose to bring the monetary aggregate back to its target, the more volatile will be the movements of interest rates. Furthermore, there is an asymmetry in the U.S. institutional structure such that rigid implementation of the base control system will under certain circumstances lead to a decline in short-term interest rates to very low levels. The final section of the paper is devoted to the examination of the Canadian institutional structure emphasizing the differences between the U.S. and Canadian systems.

Abstract: Publisher Summary Cellulolytic rumen bacteria represent a major genetic resource for polysaccharide-degrading enzymes. Effective utilization of this resource, either for improving rumen function or for industrial lignocellulosic fermentations, requires an understanding of the molecular biology of these bacteria. The enzyme systems are primarily involved in polysaccharide degradation and include cellulases, hemicellulases, xylanases, and mixed-linkage glucanases. All three organisms possess complex cellulose-degrading systems, including multiple s-(l, 4)- d -glucanases. This complexity is a reflection of the structural complexity and conformational rigidity of the native lignocellulosic substrates. DNA transfer techniques and broad host range cloning vectors developed for taxonomically related bacteria are not very effective. The chapter focuses on the use of small native cryptic plasmids to provide suitable replicons.
