Abstract: Unlike the orthodox Guomindang historiography on the Revolution of 1911, works published in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have not focused on the Tongmenghui movement and the personality of Sun Yat-sen, despite the high esteem in which Sun has always been held by the communists themselves. Sun has been reported by Chinese writers of all political colorations as the leader of the revolutionary movement. But while Guomindang historians have portrayed him as almost flawless, authors in the PRC tend to be mildly critical of his political weaknesses which stemmed from his &dquo;bourgeois class background.&dquo; The Marxist historians have given relatively little attention to biographical writings such as the nianpu (biographical chronicles) and the xianlie zhuan (biographical writings on the mar-

TL;DR: Galvanomagnetic and thermoelectric effects are measured at 80 K as functions of annealing temperature for pure n-type InSb irradiated with 1-MeV electrons as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Galvanomagnetic and thermoelectric effects are measured at 80 K as functions of annealing temperature for “pure” n-type InSb irradiated with 1-MeV electrons. The effects of defects on both carrier concentrations and carrier scattering are discussed. It is found that ionized impurity scattering and a high degree of compensation play dominant roles. Hence donor and acceptor defects are injected and removed in a pair-wise fashion.

TL;DR: Three sites in the Milparinka district, of contrasting topography and vegetation, were studied in detail and the site in a drainage channel had most species and individuals; that on the stony treeless downs, fewest.
Abstract: In 1974 the Milparinka district and Cooper Creek basin received exceptionally high rainfall. Habitats of this region are described and lists of birds seen in each habitat in 1974 are given. Three sites in the Mil- parinka district, of contrasting topography and vegetation, were studied in detail. The site in a drainage channel had most species and individuals; that on the stony treeless downs, fewest. In the Milparinka district, of fifty-two species seventy-one per cent were present throughout the year, thirteen per cent only in hot months and thirteen per cent only in cold months. Most nests were started in October.

TL;DR: In this article, the independent effects of oxygen tension and growth rate on bacteriorhodopsin synthesis in Halobacterium halobium have been studied in chemostat cultures.
Abstract: The independent effects of oxygen tension and growth rate on bacteriorhodopsin synthesis in Halobacterium halobium have been studied in chemostat cultures. Bacteriorhodopsin synthesis occurs only at low growth rates and is stimulated by low oxygen tension. Fast growth rates override the stimulatory effects of oxygen tension, with the result that bacteriorhodopsin can scarcely be detected. Illumination of cultures maintained at low growth rate and low oxygen tension significantly increases the steady state cell yield. This finding suggests that under these conditions the purple membrane proton pump is coupled to energy transduction.

TL;DR: It is concluded that current regimens used to treat hypoglycemia in neonates produce abrupt osmolar gradients which can result in intracranial bleeding and the CNS of infants at birth may be more vulnerable to abrupt changes in extracellular fluid osm than older infants.
Abstract: Acute osmolar gradients have been demonstrated to produce hemorrhage in the CNS of animals. Similar changes have been observed postmortem in brains of hyperglycemic premature infants. Studies were done in puppies at 1 day(n=5) and at 3-4 weeks of age(n=7) in which hyperglycemia was produced by IV administration of 25%(4ml/kg) or 10%(10ml/kg) glucose solutions. Similar results were noted between groups. Cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) osmolality(osm), pH and pressure were compared to simultaneous arterial blood samples. Brain water, Na and K were compared to normoglycemic controls. Plasma osm increased by 18.2±4.8mosm/1 at 10 minutes(p<0.01). CSF pH decreased from control values of 7.37±0.06 to 7.28±0.07 at 30 minutes. CSF pressure increased in all animals within 30 minutes, and decreased thereafter. CSF became bloody in each puppy usually within 1 hour of glucose administration. Gross and histologic changes noted in the brains included intramedullary and intracerebellar vascular congestion and hemorrhage. Brain water was decreased by 3%, Na was increased by 25% and K was increased by 42% in the newborn puppies; changes in older puppies were less pronounced. It is concluded that current regimens used to treat hypoglycemia in neonates produce abrupt osmolar gradients which can result in intracranial bleeding. The lesser water and electrolyte changes noted in brains of older puppies suggest that the CNS of infants at birth may be more vulnerable to abrupt changes in extracellular fluid osm than older infants.

Abstract: A short insulated thin-wire antenna lying on the surface of the earth is shown to be a valid probe of the horizontal electric-field component of a v.l.f. signal at the surface. The input impedence of such an antenna is virtually independent of the electrical characteristics of the local earth.

TL;DR: At least three distinct subclasses of microbodies are recognized on the basis of enzymatic composition, metabolic roles, and morphology: namely, peroxisomes, glyoxysomes, and microperoxisome.
Abstract: Microbodies are a distinct class of cytoplasmic organelles which are characterized by their similarities in morphology as well as by their overlapping biochemical and cytochemical properties. They are single membrane-bound granules which vary in size according to the tissue or cellular source (0.1 1.0 /zm in diameter) and usually contain enzymes such as oxidases (which generate hydrogen peroxide) and catalase (which breaks down hydrogen peroxide; see reviews by De Duve, 1969, 1973; Hruban and Rechcigl, 1969; Beevers, 1969; Tolbert, 1971; Masters and Holmes, 1977a). Cytochemically, microbodies can be identified by their peroxidatic activity with 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) (Novikoff and Goldfischer, 1969). Microbodies were first recognized by Rhodin (1958) in proximal convoluted tubule cells of mouse kidney but have now been found in a wide variety of eukaryotic cell types, including plants (Beevers, 1969; Tolbert, 1971; Vigil, 1973), animals (Hruban and Rechcigl, 1969), and unicellular organism s (De Duve and Baudhuin, 1966; Briedenbach and Beevers, 1967; Miiller eta[., 1968), and have been shown to exhibit overlapping but distinctly different enzyme activities (see Masters and Holmes, 1977a). At least three distinct subclasses of microbodies are recognized on the basis of enzymatic composition, metabolic roles, and morphology: namely, peroxisomes, glyoxysomes, and microperoxisomes. Peroxisomes are predominantly localized in the liver and kidney of vertebrate organisms (De Duve, 1973) and in photosynthetic

TL;DR: The principle of optimality is used to derive dynamic-programming equations for the cost of control programs of both deterministic and stochastic versions of these models.
Abstract: An isolation program and a compound medicare program consisting of immunization and isolation are considered for the Reed-Frost chain-binomial epidemic model. The assumption is made that the probability of contact is either small or large. The principle of optimality is used to derive dynamic-programming equations for the cost of control programs of both deterministic and stochastic versions of these models. Optimal immunization policies together with corresponding optimal costs are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the nature of the Dirac delta-function singularity in the expansion theorem for an irregular solid spherical harmonic about another center is discussed for the casel=2 and an alternative derivation, motivated by Hobson's derivative expression for solid spherical harmonics and utilizing Gauss' Divergence Theorem, is presented.
Abstract: The nature of the Dirac delta-function singularity in the expansion theorem for an irregular solid spherical harmonic about another centre is discussed for the casel=2. An alternative derivation, motivated by Hobson's derivative expression for solid spherical harmonics and utilizing Gauss' Divergence Theorem, is presented. The orientation dependence is then simply derived from the rotational properties of spherical harmonics.

TL;DR: A method is described for the gas-liquid chromatographic determination of traces of selenium in marine biological materials based on the reaction of Se(IV) with bromo- and chloro-substituted 1,2-diaminobenzenes, which results in benzoselenadiazoles so formed that are sensitive to electron capture detection.
Abstract: A method is described for the gas-liquid chromatographic determination of traces of selenium in marine biological materials. The method is based on the reaction of Se(IV) with bromo- and chloro-substituted 1,2-diaminobenzenes. The benzoselenadiazoles so formed are sensitive to electron capture detection. The sample is digested in a nitric-perchloric acid mixture and selenium is reduced to the IV oxidation state. Different aliquots of the digest solution are reacted with either 4-bromo- or 4-chloro-1,2-diaminobenzene to quantitatively form the corresponding 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole. Recovery of added selenite to a fish meal sample was 95% for the bromo derivative and 101% for the chloro derivative. Different portions of a well mixed fish meal sample were analyzed in independent laboratories by the fluorometric method and by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (hydride generation). The following mean values (microgram/g) were found: present method 1.89, fluorometric method 1.91, atomic absorption method 2.1. The lower limit of detection for the method described was 13 ng, using the bromo derivative, and 27 ng, using the chloro derivative.

TL;DR: The scientific world view and its philosophical implications have had a pervasive influence on twentieth-century poetry as discussed by the authors, and although relatively few poems contain direct comments on the social and philosophical implications of science, a study of the ways in which scientific concepts and vocabulary are used in serious artistic works can shed light on aspects of the "two cultures" debate.
Abstract: The scientific world-view and its philosophical implications have had a pervasive influence on twentieth-century poetry. Although relatively few poems contain direct comments on the social and philosophical implications of science, a study of the ways in which scientific concepts and vocabulary are used in serious artistic works can shed light on aspects of the "two cultures" debate. In addition, significant topics in social studies of science courses -e.g., epistemological questions about the nature of scientific knowledge, and questions about the ethical, social and political implications of science -can be productively studied through relevant literary works.* . The following bibliography has been designed as an aid for research into the relation between literature and science, and for courses which focus on the relation between science and culture. It has been constructed with a special view to the requirements of science students taking such courses.
