Reforming Child Protection

Abstract: Child protection is one of the most high profile and challenging areas of social work, as well as one where children's lives and family life are seen to be at stake. Vital as child protection work is, this book argues that there is a pressing need for change in the understanding and consequent organization of child protection in many English speaking countries. The authors present compelling evidence from around the globe demonstrating that systems across the Western world are failing children, families and social workers. They then set out a radical plan for reform: Providing an overview of contemporary child protection policies and practices across the English speaking world. Presenting a clear and innovative theoretical framework for understanding the problems in the child protection system. Developing an alternative, ethical framework which locates child protection in the broader context of effective and comprehensive support for children, young people and families at the neighbourhood and community levels. Grounded in the recent and contemporary literature, research and scholarly inquiry, this book capitalises on the experiences and voices of children, young people, families and workers who are the most significant stakeholders in child protection. Multi-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres as superior photocatalysts for water oxidation

Abstract: A general self-templating method is introduced to construct triple-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres, which are composed of tiny CeO2 nanoparticles. When the triple-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres are used as photocatalysts for direct water oxidation with AgNO3 as the electron scavenger, excellent activity and enhanced stability for O2 evolution are achieved, in contrast with commercial CeO2 nanoparticles, single-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres and double-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres. Such an outstanding performance is attributed to the unique properties of the triple-shelled CeO2 hollow microspheres including more efficient multiple reflections of the incident light by the inner shells, the larger surface area and more active sites for improving separation of electron–hole pairs, and the more curved surfaces unfavorable for deposition of in situ generated Ag nanoparticles.

Over qualified and under experienced: Turning graduates into hospitality managers

Abstract: Purpose – This paper sets out to report on research that investigated hospitality managers' expectations of graduate skills and compared those expectations with student perceptions of what hospitality managers value.Design/methodology/approach – The research adopted a generic skills framework and data were collected through a sample survey of 850 Australian hospitality managers and 211 undergraduate hospitality management students.Findings – Managers rated skills associated with interpersonal, problem solving, and self‐management skill domains as most important while students appeared to have realistic perceptions of the skills that managers value when recruiting hospitality graduates. The most substantial areas of disagreement came in those skills associated with the conceptual and analytical domain. Picking up litter: an application of theory-based communication to influence tourist behaviour in protected areas.

Abstract: Tourism to protected areas worldwide has increased rapidly, prompting management agencies to seek enhanced visitor management including communication aimed at influencing tourists' behaviour to reduce impacts and strengthen conservation viability. Research has shown that the greatest success in influencing visitors' actions comes from understanding what they think about a particular behaviour. This notion was investigated in this study in Mt Field National Park, Tasmania, using the theory of planned behaviour and the elaboration likelihood model of persuasion in a three-stage research process to design specific persuasive messages that were then evaluated for their impact on visitors' beliefs, attitude and behaviour. Of four salient beliefs found through survey, one offered much promise.
