TL;DR: The CT truncated cone formula applies best for precise evaluation of trapezoidal shape alteration in dilated AF atria and there is a good correlation between CTtr and echocardiography which remains a valuable estimation for volume calculation in clinical practice.
Abstract: Assessment of volume in relation with left atrial (LA) shape alteration before and after PV isolation. We compared trapezoidal modification of LA using echocardiography with the ellipsoid formula (Eel) and CT, with both ellipsoid (CTel) and truncated cone formulas (CTtr), in 40 patients, before and ±3 months after AF ablation. A trapezoidal shape was present in 76.3% of patients. The different volume measurements were statistically correlated (r = 0.603–0.837, p < 0.001) irrespective of the formula used. After reverse remodeling, with 77.5% of patients in stable sinus rhythm, correlation coefficient for volume remained significant (p < 0.001). In AF, dilation of the LA is associated with a geometrical trapezoidal change in many cases. The CT truncated cone formula applies best for precise evaluation of trapezoidal shape alteration in dilated AF atria. There is a good correlation between CTtr and echocardiography which remains a valuable estimation for volume calculation in clinical practice.

TL;DR: VIA yielded high sensitivity but its accuracy is still limited in pre-cancerous lesions during cervical cancer screening, while the Pap smear has acceptable sensitivity and specificity, but its false-negative rate is still high.
Abstract: This study aims to determine the diagnostic values of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and Pap smear in a cervical cancer screening program at a community level in Vietnam. A cross-sectional analysis was obtained, including 1034 women of reproductive age from Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam from 09/2012 to 09/2013. Samples were taken from cervixes for Pap smear testing, followed by visual inspection with acetic acid. Subjects with abnormal VIA and/or positive cytology results were invited for colposcopy and biopsy. Histologic confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+) served as gold standards for diagnostic values analysis. Abnormal VIA results were recorded in 87 cases (7.7%). The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of VIA for CIN2+ were 88.8%, 43.8%, 63.4%, 51.2% and 83.3%, respectively. Diagnostic values of Pap smear were 58.0%, 85.2%, 69.9%, 83.3% and 61.3% for its sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV and NPV, respectively. VIA yielded high sensitivity but its accuracy is still limited in pre-cancerous lesions during cervical cancer screening. The Pap smear has acceptable sensitivity and specificity, but its false-negative rate is still high. We recommend a combination of different tests to increase the efficiency of screening in our community.

TL;DR: In this paper, 2-((4-ethylphenoxy)methyl)-N-(phenylcarbamothioyl)benzamides were tested by qualitative and quantitative methods on various bacterial and fungal strains and proved to be active at low concentrations against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi.
Abstract: New acylthiourea derivatives, 2-((4-ethylphenoxy)methyl)-N-(phenylcarbamothioyl)benzamides, were tested by qualitative and quantitative methods on various bacterial and fungal strains and proved to be active at low concentrations against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. These compounds were prepared by the reaction of 2-((4-ethylphenoxy)methyl)benzoyl isothiocyanate with various primary aromatic amines, and were characterised by melting point and solubility. The structures were identified by elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR, and IR spectral data. The level of antimicrobial activity of the new 2-((4-ethylphenoxy)methyl)benzoylthiourea derivatives was dependent on the type, number and position of the substituent on the phenyl group attached to thiourea nitrogen. The iodine and nitro substituents favoured the antimicrobial activity against the Gram-negative bacterial strains, while the highest inhibitory effect against Gram-positive and fungal strains was exhibited by compounds with electron-donating substituents such as the methyl and ethyl groups.

TL;DR: Recently, laser activity has been achieved in the low-phonon-energy, moisture-resistant bromide host crystals: neodymium-doped potassium lead bromides (Nd3+:KPb2Br5) and rubidium leadbromide (RbPb 2Br5). Laser activity at 1.18 and 0.97 µm resulting from the 4F5/2 + 2H9/2 → 4IJ transitions (J=13/2 and 11/2) in Nd:RbB2Br
Abstract: Recently, laser activity has been achieved in the low-phonon-energy, moisture-resistant bromide host crystals: neodymium-doped potassium lead bromide (Nd3+:KPb2Br5) and rubidium lead bromide (Nd3+:RbPb2Br5). Laser activity at 1.07 µm was observed for both crystalline materials. Laser operation at the new wavelengths of 1.18 and 0.97 µm resulting from the 4F5/2 + 2H9/2 → 4IJ transitions (J=13/2 and 11/2) in Nd:RbPb2Br5 was achieved for the first time in a solid-state laser material. We present cw pump-probe spectra and discuss excited-state absorption and reabsorption processes due to the long-lived lower laser levels, as well as possible depopulation mechanisms feasible for more efficient laser operation in these crystals. The bromides are compared with potassium lead chloride (Nd3+:KPb2Cl5).

TL;DR: Strengthening the social support network (involving supervisors and co-workers), reducing psychological job demand and assuring work protection materials at the workplace may highly facilitate reducing work-related depression.
Abstract: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of work-related depression among the employees of a shoe manufacturing factory in Haiphong City, Vietnam. We carried out this cross-sectional study among 420 workers in 2012 in Le Lai II Shoe Manufacturing Factory in Haiphong City, Vietnam using Karasek’s Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM IV) tool for measuring depression. The study results show that a relatively high proportion of workers (20.7%) belongs to the high-strain group based on Karasek’s model. The prevalence of work-related depression among workers was relatively high (18.8%). The factors associated with depression at work were high psychological demand (adjusted OR = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.1–8.3), low social support (adjusted OR = 4.7, 95% CI: 1.2–12.8), inadequate work protection materials (OR = 4.1, 95% CI: 2.2–10.1) and work absenteeism (OR = 6.2, 95% CI: 2.5–18.9). Strengthening the social support network (involving supervisors and co-workers), reducing psychological job demand and assuring work protection materials at the workplace may highly facilitate reducing work-related depression.
