TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated in vitro total content of polyphenols and flavonoids and in vivo antioxidant effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Carduus acanthoides L. as compared to that of Vaccinium myrtillus L. The chemical composition of plant extracts was determined using thin-layer chromatography, HPLC and GC-MS techniques.
Abstract: This study was aimed to evaluate in vitro total content of polyphenols and flavonoids and in vivo antioxidant effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Carduus acanthoides L. as compared to that of Vaccinium myrtillus L. The total content of polyphenols and flavonoids was evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. The chemical composition of plant extracts was determined using thin-layer chromatography, HPLC, and GC-MS techniques. Tests for the antioxidant activity were performed using streptozotocin-diabetic adult Swiss albino mice distributed in four groups, including three control groups – mice with normal pancreatic function (group I), diabetic mice (group II), and diabetic mice treated with V. myrtillus extract recognized for its antioxidant effect (group IV) – and the test group of diabetic mice treated with C. acanthoides extract at 150 mg/kg b.w. (group III). At the end of experiments, the animals were sacrificed and the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase were tested, the level of lipid peroxides was determined, and a histological analysis of the pancreas was performed. Both plant extracts contain polyphenols and flavonoids in significant amounts due to which they have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant enzymes exhibited higher activities in mice treated with C. acanthoides extract, but the level of lipid peroxides was significantly lower in mice treated with V. myrtillus extract.

TL;DR: In this article, a 3D virtual model for an orthotic device which is subjected to an optimization process based on dimensional, geometric and material criteria is analyzed. And the results obtained for the normal knee, OA knee, and oA knee-orthosis assemblies are compared.
Abstract: In order to improve the quality of human walking, the present paper is analyzing a 3D virtual model for an orthotic device which is subjected to an optimization process based on dimensional, geometric and material criteria. For geometric modeling of the human knee joint were used the embedded applications: DesignModeler, SpaceClaim under AnsysWorkbench software package and for the orthotic device it was used ProEngineer application. The orthotic device is designed to rehabilitate people with knee problems, especially for the osteoarthritis affection. The geometric model of the joint shows a 50 tilt in varus, the joint beeing affected by osteoarthritis in the medial compartment. Using Ansys simulation environment, the virtual assembly joint orthois has been subjected to a nonlinear analysis based on the contacts and on the materials used. The proposed orthotic device seeks to improve the quality of walking by minimizing the loads from the knee joint, also on cartilage and on the menisci. Finally there are beeing compared the results obtained for normal knee, OA knee and OA knee-orthosis assemblies.

TL;DR: The results describe the direct correlation between the decline of a specific humoral anti-T.
Abstract: Objectives Persistence of antibodies against pathogens after antimicrobial treatment is a marker of therapy failure or evolution to a chronic infection. The kinetics of antibody production decrease following antigen elimination is highly variable, and predicting the duration of soluble immunity in infectious diseases is often impossible. This hampers the development and use of immunoassays for diagnostic and seroepidemiological purposes. In the case of Trichomonas vaginalis infection, the kinetics of antibody levels decrease following therapy has never been studied. We thus investigated the clearance of circulating anti- T. vaginalis IgGs after pharmacological treatment in patients affected by trichomoniasis. Methods 18 female patients affected by acute trichomoniasis were enrolled in this study. After metronidazole therapy administration, subjects were followed up monthly up to 5 months, and serum levels of anti- T. vaginalis IgGs were measured by ELISA. Results We showed that a successful therapy is characterised by a relatively fast decline of specific antibodies, until turning into negative by ELISA in 1–3 months. In a few patients we observed that the persistence of anti- T. vaginalis antibodies was associated with an evolution to chronic infection, which may be due to treatment failure or to reinfection by untreated sexual partners. Conclusions Our results describe the direct correlation between the decline of a specific humoral anti- T. vaginalis response and an effective antimicrobial therapy. These findings may facilitate the follow-up approach to circumvent limitations in developing new diagnostic tools and techniques routinely used in microbiology laboratories to assess the presence of T. vaginalis in clinical samples.

TL;DR: In this paper, a three-component scoring method was developed for "Physical component score (PCS), "MCS", and "Role/social score (RCS)". Collectively, these summary scores are called the "QOL summary score", which is regarded as a more detailed health summary score.
Abstract: Although epidemiological studies revealed a relationship between psychosocial states, such as depressive symptoms, and nutritional intake, limited information is currently available on vitamin intake. The Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) is not limited to a specific disease, it is constructed based on a universal concept of health and is used to evaluate the Quality of life (QOL). A three-component scoring method was developed for "Physical component score (PCS)", "Mental component score (MCS)", and "Role/social score (RCS)". Collectively, these summary scores are called the "QOL summary score", which is regarded as a more detailed health summary score. In the present study, we aimed at epidemiologically examine the relationship between vitamin intake and QOL in middle-aged and elderly population in 3162 residents in Japan. In women, a multiple regression analysis showed a positive correlation between all vitamin intake and PCS scores, and between vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin C, and MCS scores. In consideration of depression as MCS of SF-36 and chronic pain as PCS, an insufficient vitamin intake may affect QOL in women; however, a causal relationship has not yet been demonstrated.
