TL;DR: In this article, the authors have studied reinforced tricalcium phosphate (TCP), chitosan, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/methyl methacrylated (MMA) as potential cement, which can improve biocompatibility and also enhance the mechanical properties of the cement.
Abstract: Synthetic Polymers, both organic and inorganic, are used in a wide variety of biomedical applications. The polymers can be biodegradable or nondegradable. Chitosan (CH), which is a naturally biodegradable, non-toxic biopolymer obtained by the deacetylation of chitin, has been demonstrated to have an intrinsic activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria, filamentous fungi and yeast. Several investigators have studied reinforced tricalcium phosphate (TCP), Chitosan, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) as potential cement. In fact addition of TCP with chitosan to the cement can improve biocompatibility and also enhance the mechanical properties of the cement because of its both biocompatibility and osteoconductivity properties. Crystalline phase and microstructure of the cement with hydroxyapatite - poly (methyl-methacrylate) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM; FEI Company), with the purpose to draw solid conclusions about the influence of the particles size, form and uniform mixing on the chemical process. We acquired PMMA sorted according to granulometric size.

TL;DR: The good result obtained in the case described, as well as in the studies published in literature, demonstrates that this technique is efficient for correction of scoliotic deformities both in frontal and sagittal plane, easy to perform and associated with a minimal risk for complications.
Abstract: Introduction Between 2004-2006 in Moscow at the Russian University of People’s Friendship Department of Orthopaedic and Traumatology under the lead of Alexandr Laka, there have been created more new instruments, which allowed individualised treatment for each scoliotic patient.Case outline The case that we bring to your attention belongs to the patients group to which the deformation practically reached it’s final form. The patient is known with dextroconvex thoraco-lumbar idiopathic scoliosis that set out at the age of 11 years. Despite a long physical treatment, the deformity progressed reaching by the time she addressed to us, a critical stage with a 90o Cobb angle and 45o rotation at T9 apical vertebrae. Surgery was performed by using LSZ implant for correction of scoliotic deformity. The surgical technique is described step by step and the final result was a good tridimensional correction. Postoperatory X-Ray demonstrates 50% correction, with Cobb angle of 45o and 15% torsion correction. Conclusion The good result obtained in the case described, as well as in the studies published in literature, demonstrates that this technique is efficient for correction of scoliotic deformities both in frontal and sagittal plane, easy to perform and associated with a minimal risk for complications and encourage us to recommend this technique to other spine surgery departments.

TL;DR: In this article, the elaborated basaltic-andesite compound ceramic material, in mixture with porcelain-clay and alumina was characterized with SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetric analysis.
Abstract: A special ceramic material with specific performances for some extreme environments can be elaborated using basaltic-andesite as raw material. The volcanic rocks presents specific compositions, a complex structure and properties, so some of them, such as basaltic-andesite, may have multiple utilization. The elaborated basaltic-andesite compound ceramic material, in mixture with porcelain-clay and alumina was characterized with SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Many of the properties of this sort of ceramic material surpass the electric insulator porcelain type KER 110 ceramic, and in some approximate the high alumina-content ceramic materials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the 3D geometric modeling of the knee prosthesis components using the latest generation of CAD-CAE applications as DesignModeler and SpaceClaim under Ansys Workbench software package.
Abstract: This paper presents the three-dimensional geometric modeling of the knee prosthesis components using the latest generation of CAD-CAE applications as DesignModeler and SpaceClaim under Ansys Workbench software package. The mesh generation and the contact conditions are presented. The parameterized virtual models of the knee prosthesis allow different changes in shape or dimensions which can lead to the optimization of the implant and of the biomechanics of the prosthetic knee.
