TL;DR: An undescribed anatomical variant is reported here, that of vermian arteries branched from the vertebral arteries (VAs) and replacing the medial branches of the posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (PICAs) that, in turn, were leaving the basilar artery.
Abstract: A previously undescribed anatomical variant is reported here, that of vermian arteries (vAs) branched from the vertebral arteries (VAs) and replacing the medial branches of the posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (PICAs) that, in turn, were leaving the basilar artery. Both vAs left the VAs in the foramen magnum. The left vA initially looped in front of the spinal root of the accessory nerve (Sp11) and then looped inferiorly on the dorsal side of the spinal cord, in the vertebral canal and continued ascending on the dorsal surface of the medulla oblongata. The right vA looped dorsally to the Sp11 above the foramen magnum, and also ascended dorsally to the medulla. Both vAs were distributed to the vermis. On both sides, the PICAs looped above the glossopharyngeal nerves and the jugular foramina and continued as only lateral terminal branches of a normal PICA that descended in countercurrent on the outer side of the variant vAs. Such anatomical variation is relevant for surgery and microsurgery on both sides of the foramen magnum and in the posterior cerebral fossa.

TL;DR: The data showed that cytotoxicity was directly linked with the unreacted monomer — 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) present in these composites, which makes them suitable for further testing in order to be used in endodontic treatment.
Abstract: The toxic potential of the endodontic sealers ingredients, especially the unreacted monomer, that can irritate the periapical tissue and interfere with the healing process, thus having a negative impact on the biocompatibility of the material. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of three experimental endodontic sealers on cells viability in vitro. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were used. The experiments were done with solid samples and extracts of sealers in artificial saliva and water. The experiments evaluated the cytotoxicity of the residual monomers that resulted from the tested composites. The decrease in cell viability was quantified by colorimetric measurement of formazan. The components of the sealers dissolved in artificial saliva and water were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HUVEC are a novelty for testing the endodontic sealers biocompatibility, with certain advantages compared to other cell types used in the literature, e.g. HELA cells, fibroblasts. The data showed that cytotoxicity was directly linked with the unreacted monomer — 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) present in these composites. Two of the three formulations had little or no cytotoxic effect, which makes them suitable for further testing in order to be used in endodontic treatment.

TL;DR: This study aims to investigate how laser acupuncture at acupoints effects on human brain by measuring the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and expects that when the ac upoints are reached by a laser light, the response of brain will be recognized with producing the same EEG signals with the acupuncture needles.
Abstract: Recently, there has been increasing trend in the use of laser therapy at points of acupuncture as an alternative method to metal needles. Many researchers conducted the number of studies on laser acupuncture. Most of them used many kinds of laser with different wavelengths, or power in order to show the impacts on healing pains. Besides, many clinical doctors applied laser therapy for a variety of treatment purposes. However, it still lacks evidence to prove the actual mechanism, and the effects on brain in detail. In this study, the authors aim to investigate how laser acupuncture at acupoints effects on human brain by measuring the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. To carry out the research, the authors initially are going to use acupuncture needles at acupoints on twenty participants. Then, the laser therapy will be replaced in order to compare its effect to the previous one on human brain. During the experiments, Alice 5 machine is used for collecting and analyzing the EEG signal. Finally, the authors expect that when the acupoints are reached by a laser light, the response of brain will be recognized with producing the same EEG signals with the acupuncture needles.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the value of ovarian volume measured by transvaginal ultrasound and its relationship with anthropometry and serum hormonal levels in a polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) population.
Abstract: Purpose This study was designed to explore the value of ovarian volume (OV) measured by transvaginal ultrasound and its relationship with anthropometry and serum hormonal levels in a polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) population. Patients and Methods A total of 119 women with PCOS from infertile couples were recruited in this cross-sectional study. On days 2-4 of the menstrual cycle, transvaginal ultrasound examinations were performed, and hormonal profiles were measured. PCOS diagnosis was based on the Rotterdam 2003 criteria and classified into four phenotype groups. The PCOS group (study group) and the non-PCOS group (control group) were compared. Results The mean age of the participants was 32.66±4.10 years compared to 33.99±4.78 years in 273 cases (69.6%) without PCOS. The mean OV was statistically larger in the PCOS group than in the non-PCOS group (7.65±3.23 mL vs 6.08±3.67 mL, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with serum anti-Mullerian (AMH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels (r=0.30; p < 0.001 and r=0.23; p < 0.001, respectively), and weakly and inversely correlated with age (-0.182, p < 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of OV in the diagnosis of PCOS was 0.613 (0.557-0.670, 95% CI). Conclusion The enlarged OV is remarkable in women with PCOS and is related to AMH and LH concentrations. Although the diagnostic potential of PCOS is substantially low, OV alone may contribute to predicting the severity of PCOS and better performance for the diagnosis of PCOS phenotypes.
