Abstract: Different mole ratios of TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposites with effective contacts have are fabricated by putting BiVO4 nanoparticles into the TiO2 sol, followed by thermal treatment at 450 °C. Based on the transient-state surface photovoltage responses and the atmosphere-controlled steady-state surface photovoltage spectra, it is concluded that the photogenerated charge carriers in the TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposite with a proper mole ratio (5%) display much longer lifetime and higher separation than those in the BiVO4 alone. This is responsible for the unexpected activity for photoelectrochemical oxidation of water, for photocatalytic production of H2, and for photocatalytic degradation of phenol as a model pollutant under visible irradiation. Moreover, it is suggested that the prolonged lifetime and increased separation of photogenerated charges in the fabricated TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposite is attributed to the unusual spatial transfer of visible-excited high-energy electrons of BiVO4 to TiO2. This work will provide feasible routes to synthesize visible-light responsive nanomaterials for efficient solar utilization.

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the corrosion of zerovalent iron (ZVI) by oxygen (O(2)) via the Fenton reaction can lead to the oxidation of various organic and inorganic compounds. However, the nature of the oxidants involved (i.e., ferryl ion (Fe(IV)) versus hydroxyl radical (HO(•))) is still a controversial issue. In this work, we reevaluated the relative importance of these oxidants and their role in As(III) oxidation during the corrosion of nanoscale ZVI (nZVI) in air-saturated water. It was shown that Fe(IV) species could react with sulfoxides (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide, methyl phenyl sulfoxide, and methyl p-tolyl sulfoxide) through a 2-electron transfer step producing corresponding sulfones, which markedly differed from their HO(•)-involved products. When using these sulfoxides as probe compounds, the formation of oxidation products indicative of HO(•) but no generation of sulfone products supporting Fe(IV) participation were observed in the nZVI/O(2) system over a wide pH range. As(III) could be completely or partially oxidized by nZVI in air-saturated water. Addition of scavengers for solution-phase HO(•) and/or Fe(IV) quenched As(III) oxidation at acidic pH but had little effect as solution pH increased, highlighting the importance of the heterogeneous iron surface reactions for As(III) oxidation at circumneutral pH.

Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of stabilization for a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system with nonuniform uncertain sampling. The sampling is not required to be periodic, and the only assumption is that the distance between any two consecutive sampling instants is less than a given bound. By using the input delay approach, the T-S fuzzy system with variable uncertain sampling is transformed into a continuous-time T-S fuzzy system with a delay in the state. Though the resulting closed-loop state-delayed T-S fuzzy system takes a standard form, the existing results on delay T-S fuzzy systems cannot be used for our purpose due to their restrictive assumptions on the derivative of state delay. A new condition guaranteeing asymptotic stability of the closed-loop sampled-data system is derived by a Lyapunov approach plus the free weighting matrix technique. Based on this stability condition, two procedures for designing state-feedback control laws are given: one casts the controller design into a convex optimization by introducing some over design and the other utilizes the cone complementarity linearization idea to cast the controller design into a sequential minimization problem subject to linear matrix inequality constraints, which can be readily solved using standard numerical software. An illustrative example is provided to show the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed controller design methodology.
