TL;DR: All proposed conditions for the existence of positive observers and dynamic output-feedback controllers for positive linear systems with interval uncertainties are expressed in terms of the system matrices, and can be verified easily by effective algorithms.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the design of observers and dynamic output-feedback controllers for positive linear systems with interval uncertainties. The continuous-time case and the discrete-time case are both treated in a unified linear matrix inequality (LMI) framework. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of positive observers with general structure are established, and the desired observer matrices can be constructed easily through the solutions of LMIs. An optimization algorithm to the error dynamics is also given. Furthermore, the problem of positive stabilization by dynamic output-feedback controllers is investigated. It is revealed that an unstable positive system cannot be positively stabilized by a certain dynamic output-feedback controller without taking the positivity of the error signals into account. When the positivity of the error signals is considered, an LMI-based synthesis approach is provided to design the stabilizing controllers. Unlike other conditions which may require structural decomposition of positive matrices, all proposed conditions in this paper are expressed in terms of the system matrices, and can be verified easily by effective algorithms. Two illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness and applicability of the theoretical results.

TL;DR: Significant changes in methylation were seen in imprinted genes, genes known to play roles in cell cycle, growth, apoptosis, cancer, and in a large number of genes associated with olfaction, particularly in genes on chromosomes 7, 10, and X.
Abstract: Alcohol exposure during development can cause variable neurofacial deficit and growth retardation known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The mechanism underlying FASD is not fully understood. However, alcohol, which is known to affect methyl donor metabolism, may induce aberrant epigenetic changes contributing to FASD. Using a tightly controlled whole-embryo culture, we investigated the effect of alcohol exposure (88 mM) at early embryonic neurulation on genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression in the C57BL/6 mouse. The DNA methylation landscape around promoter CpG islands at early mouse development was analyzed using MeDIP (methylated DNA immunoprecipitation) coupled with microarray (MeDIP-chip). At early neurulation, genes associated with high CpG promoters (HCP) had a lower ratio of methylation but a greater ratio of expression. Alcohol-induced alterations in DNA methylation were observed, particularly in genes on chromosomes 7, 10 and X; remarkably, a >10 fold increase in the number of genes with increased methylation on chromosomes 10 and X was observed in alcohol-exposed embryos with a neural tube defect phenotype compared to embryos without a neural tube defect. Significant changes in methylation were seen in imprinted genes, genes known to play roles in cell cycle, growth, apoptosis, cancer, and in a large number of genes associated with olfaction. Altered methylation was associated with significant (p < 0.01) changes in expression for 84 genes. Sequenom EpiTYPER DNA methylation analysis was used for validation of the MeDIP-chip data. Increased methylation of genes known to play a role in metabolism (Cyp4f13) and decreased methylation of genes associated with development (Nlgn3, Elavl2, Sox21 and Sim1), imprinting (Igf2r) and chromatin (Hist1h3d) was confirmed. In a mouse model for FASD, we show for the first time that alcohol exposure during early neurulation can induce aberrant changes in DNA methylation patterns with associated changes in gene expression, which together may contribute to the observed abnormal fetal development.

TL;DR: The authors fabricate a metasurface with high brightness and large gamut structured colors by combining a silicon metasURface with a refractive index matching layer, improving the brightness and the color purity significantly.
Abstract: The achievement of structural color has shown advantages in large-gamut, high-saturation, high-brightness, and high-resolution. While a large number of plasmonic/dielectric nanostructures have been developed for structural color, the previous approaches fail to match all the above criterion simultaneously. Herein we utilize the Si metasurface to demonstrate an all-in-one solution for structural color. Due to the intrinsic material loss, the conventional Si metasurfaces only have a broadband reflection and a small gamut of 78% of sRGB. Once they are combined with a refractive index matching layer, the reflection bandwidth and the background reflection are both reduced, improving the brightness and the color purity significantly. Consequently, the experimentally demonstrated gamut has been increased to around 181.8% of sRGB, 135.6% of Adobe RGB, and 97.2% of Rec.2020. Meanwhile, high refractive index of silicon preserves the distinct color in a pixel with 2 × 2 array of nanodisks, giving a diffraction-limit resolution. Here, the authors fabricate a metasurface with high brightness and large gamut structured colors by combining a silicon metasurface with a refractive index matching layer. The experimentally demonstrated gamut is 181.8% of sRGB, 135.6% of Adobe RGB, and 97.2% of Rec.2020.
