TL;DR: The results suggest that permanganate is a better choice than ozone for controlling algae derived pollutants and disinfection byproducts after preozonation.
Abstract: Aqueous suspensions of Microcystis aeruginosa were preoxidized with either ozone or permanganate and then subjected to chlorination under conditions simulating drinking water purification. The impacts of the two oxidants on the algal cells and on the subsequent production of dissolved organic matter and disinfection byproducts were investigated. Preozonation dramatically increased disinfection byproduct formation during chlorination, especially the formation of haloaldehydes, haloacetonitriles, and halonitromethanes. Preoxidation with permanganate had much less effect on disinfection byproduct formation. Preozonation destroyed algal cell walls and cell membranes to release intracellular organic matter (IOM), and less than 2.0% integrated cells were left after preozonation with the dosage as low as 0.4 mg/L. Preoxidation with permanganate mainly released organic matter adsorbed on the cells' surface without causing any damage to the cells' integrity, so the increase in byproduct formation was much less. More organic nitrogen and lower molecular weight precursors were produced in a dissolved phase after preozonation than permanganate preoxidation, which contributes to the significant increase of disinfection byproducts after preozonation. The results suggest that permanganate is a better choice than ozone for controlling algae derived pollutants and disinfection byproducts.

01 Mar 2018TL;DR: In this paper, the image is transformed into the neutrosophic set domain, which is described using three membership sets: T, I and F, and two operations, @a-mean and @b-enhancement operations are proposed to reduce the set indeterminacy.
Abstract: Neutrosophic set (NS), a part of neutrosophy theory, studies the origin, nature and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. NS is a formal framework that has been recently proposed. However, NS needs to be specified from a technical point of view for a given application or field. We apply NS, after defining some concepts and operations, for image segmentation. The image is transformed into the NS domain, which is described using three membership sets: T, I and F. The entropy in NS is defined and employed to evaluate the indeterminacy. Two operations, @a-mean and @b-enhancement operations are proposed to reduce the set indeterminacy. Finally, the proposed method is employed to perform image segmentation using a @c-means clustering. We have conducted experiments on a variety of images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can segment the images automatically and effectively. Especially, it can segment the ''clean'' images and the images having noise with different noise levels.

TL;DR: The H∞ performance is introduced to realize the disturbance suppression by selecting the actuator forces as virtual inputs, and an adaptive robust control technology is further used to design controllers which help real force inputs track virtual ones.
Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of vibration suppression in vehicular active suspension systems, whose aim is to stabilize the attitude of the vehicle and improve the riding comfort. A full-car model is adopted, and electrohydraulic actuators with highly nonlinear characteristics are considered to form the basis of accurate control. In this paper, the H∞ performance is introduced to realize the disturbance suppression by selecting the actuator forces as virtual inputs, and an adaptive robust control technology is further used to design controllers which help real force inputs track virtual ones. The resulting controllers are robust against both actuator parametric uncertainties and uncertain actuator nonlinearities. The stability analysis for the closed-loop system is given within the Lyapunov framework. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control law, where different road conditions are considered in order to reveal the closed-loop system performance in detail.

TL;DR: Theoretical and experimental approaches for understanding the underlying mechanism of surface plasmon are discussed and a proper discussion and perspective of the remaining challenges and future opportunities for plAsmonic nanomaterials and plasMon-related chemistry in the field of energy conversion and storage are given.
Abstract: Plasmonic nanomaterials coupled with catalytically active surfaces can provide unique opportunities for various catalysis applications, where surface plasmons produced upon proper light excitation can be adopted to drive and/or facilitate various chemical reactions. A brief introduction to the localized surface plasmon resonance and recent design and fabrication of highly efficient plasmonic nanostructures, including plasmonic metal nanostructures and metal/semiconductor heterostructures is given. Taking advantage of these plasmonic nanostructures, the following highlights summarize recent advances in plasmon-driven photochemical reactions (coupling reactions, O2 dissociation and oxidation reactions, H2 dissociation and hydrogenation reactions, N2 fixation and NH3 decomposition, and CO2 reduction) and plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, alcohol oxidation reaction, and CO2 reduction). Theoretical and experimental approaches for understanding the underlying mechanism of surface plasmon are discussed. A proper discussion and perspective of the remaining challenges and future opportunities for plasmonic nanomaterials and plasmon-related chemistry in the field of energy conversion and storage is given in conclusion.

TL;DR: Large area designs for diagnostic and therapeutic stretchable sensor and actuator webs that conformally wrap the epicardium, establishing robust contact without sutures, mechanical fixtures, tapes, or surgical adhesives are constructed.
Abstract: Curved surfaces, complex geometries, and time-dynamic deformations of the heart create challenges in establishing intimate, nonconstraining interfaces between cardiac structures and medical devices or surgical tools, particularly over large areas. We constructed large area designs for diagnostic and therapeutic stretchable sensor and actuator webs that conformally wrap the epicardium, establishing robust contact without sutures, mechanical fixtures, tapes, or surgical adhesives. These multifunctional web devices exploit open, mesh layouts and mount on thin, bio-resorbable sheets of silk to facilitate handling in a way that yields, after dissolution, exceptionally low mechanical moduli and thicknesses. In vivo studies in rabbit and pig animal models demonstrate the effectiveness of these device webs for measuring and spatially mapping temperature, electrophysiological signals, strain, and physical contact in sheet and balloon-based systems that also have the potential to deliver energy to perform localized tissue ablation.
