29 Dec 2011TL;DR: Experimental results show that the fast intra mode decision scheme provides almost 20% time savings in all intra low complexity cases on average with negligible loss of coding efficiency.
Abstract: As the next generation standard of video coding, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is intended to provide significantly better coding efficiency than all existing video coding standards. To improve the coding efficiency of intra frame coding, up to 34 intra prediction modes are defined in HEVC. The best mode among these pre-defined intra prediction modes is selected by rate-distortion optimization (RDO) for each block. If all directions are tested in the RDO process, it will be very time-consuming. To alleviate the encoder computation load, this paper proposes a new method to reduce the candidates in RDO process. In addition, the direction information of the neighboring blocks is made full use of to speed up intra mode decision. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides 20% and 28% time savings in intra high efficiency and low complexity cases on average compared to the default encoding scheme in HM 1.0 with almost the same coding efficiency. This algorithm has been proposed to HEVC standard and partially adopted into the HEVC test model.

08 Nov 2017TL;DR: A preliminary study on neural question generation from text with the SQuAD dataset is conducted, and the experiment results show that the method can produce fluent and diverse questions.
Abstract: Automatic question generation aims to generate questions from a text passage where the generated questions can be answered by certain sub-spans of the given passage. Traditional methods mainly use rigid heuristic rules to transform a sentence into related questions. In this work, we propose to apply the neural encoder-decoder model to generate meaningful and diverse questions from natural language sentences. The encoder reads the input text and the answer position, to produce an answer-aware input representation, which is fed to the decoder to generate an answer focused question. We conduct a preliminary study on neural question generation from text with the SQuAD dataset, and the experiment results show that our method can produce fluent and diverse questions.

TL;DR: To achieve sensorless wide-speed-range operation, a hybrid position estimation strategy combining the high frequency (HF) signal injection method with the electromotive force (EMF)-based method is presented.
Abstract: A position sensorless control strategy of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive based on a digital signal processor (DSP) is proposed. To achieve sensorless wide-speed-range operation, a hybrid position estimation strategy combining the high frequency (HF) signal injection method with the electromotive force (EMF)-based method is presented. At low-speed range, an HF voltage signal is injected, and a rotor position observer is designed to improve the robustness to the load disturbance. At middle- and high-speed ranges, a sliding-mode observer based on the extended EMF of IPMSM is designed for sensorless operation. Moreover, during the switch-over area, the two position estimation methods are both enabled for the sensorless control. A software phase-locked loop and a dead-time compensation strategy are adopted to improve the position estimation accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the control strategy with a sensorless IPMSM drive based on a DSP.

TL;DR: In this article, the most recent advances in preparing micro-nocapsules based on different types of micro/nanocontainers, i.e., organic polymer coatings, inorganic clays, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, polyelectrolyte multilayers, etc.
Abstract: Smart self-healing coatings for corrosion protection of metallic substrates (steel, magnesium, and aluminium, and their alloys) have attracted tremendous interest due to their capability to prevent crack propagation in the protective coatings by releasing active agents from micro/nanocapsules, that is, micro/nano particles consisting of a coating layer or a shell (micro/nanocontainers) and core material (solids, droplets of liquids or gases), in a controllable manner. This paper aims to give a concise review on the most recent advances in preparing micro/nanocapsules based on different types of micro/nanocontainers, i.e., organic polymer coatings, inorganic clays, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, polyelectrolyte multilayers, etc. for smart coatings with self-healing properties. The state-of-the-art design and preparation of micro/nanocapsules are highlighted with detailed examples.
