TL;DR: In this paper, the feasibility of space-borne microwave radiometers for monitoring the evolution of snow cover in a drainage area is investigated using four winter sets of SSM/I radiometer observations for the 51,000 km 2 River Kemijoki drainage area, Northern Finland, are used for analyses.

TL;DR: In this paper, the theory of Sobolev spaces on a metric measure space is used to define p-harmonic functions as minimizers of the p-Dirichlet integral.
Abstract: Using the theory of Sobolev spaces on a metric measure space we are able to apply calculus of variations and define p-harmonic functions as minimizers of the p-Dirichlet integral. More generally, we study regularity properties of quasi-minimizers of p-Dirichlet integrals in a metric measure space. Applying the De Giorgi method we show that quasi-minimizers, and in particular p-harmonic functions, satisfy Harnack's inequality, the strong maximum principle, and are locally Holder continuous, if the space is doubling and supports a Poincare inequality.

09 Jun 1997TL;DR: A data organization system and genuine content-addressable memory called the WEBSOM, a two-layer self-organizing map (SOM) architecture where documents become mapped as points on the upper map, in a geometric order that describes the similarity of their contents.
Abstract: This paper describes a data organization system and genuine content-addressable memory called the WEBSOM. It is a two-layer self-organizing map (SOM) architecture where documents become mapped as points on the upper map, in a geometric order that describes the similarity of their contents. By standard browsing tools one can select from the map subsets of documents that are most similar mutually. It is also possible to submit free-form queries about the wanted documents whereby the WEBSOM locates the best-matching documents. The document map exemplified in this paper has over 100000 map nodes, with 315 inputs at each, and over 1000000 documents have been organized by it. The system has been implemented by software on a general-purpose computer.

TL;DR: In this paper, an RF front-end for dual-band dual-mode operation is presented, which consumes 22.5 mW from a 1.8-V supply and is designed to be used in a direct-conversion WCDMA and GSM receiver.
Abstract: An RF front-end for dual-band dual-mode operation is presented. The front-end consumes 22.5 mW from a 1.8-V supply and is designed to be used in a direct-conversion WCDMA and GSM receiver. The front-end has been fabricated in a 0.35-/spl mu/m BiCMOS process and, in both modes, can use the same devices in the signal path except the LNA input transistors. The front-end has a 27-dB gain control range, which is divided between the LNA and quadrature mixers. The measured double-sideband noise figure and voltage gain are 2.3 dB, 39.5 dB, for the GSM and 4.3 dB, 33 dB for the WCDMA, respectively. The linearity parameters IIP3 and IIP2 are -19 dBm, +35 dBm for the GSM and -14.5 dBm and +34 dBm for the WCDMA, respectively.

TL;DR: The results showed that positive design outcome was correlated with the commonality of examples presented, whereas the amount of examples did not show a respective effect, indicating that common examples cause more fixation than novel ones.
Abstract: This paper presents a design experiment that was conducted to study the effects of idea exposure in design idea generation. Earlier studies have shown that idea exposure can stimulate and interfere with cognitive processes relating to succeeding idea generation, which in turn results in either process gains or losses concerning design outcome. However, fairly little is known about the network and interplay between supplementary effects of idea exposure. Perhaps the most relevant form of cognitive interference in creative design problem-solving is design fixation. Designers may become influenced by presented solutions, so that they reproduce features or principles instead of finding new ways to fulfil functional requirements. In the experiment, subjects were exposed to different amounts and types of examples prior to idea generation. Idea generation performance was measured by the amount of new concepts produced by each subject. The results showed that positive design outcome was correlated with the common...
