Abstract: It is found that there exist composite media that exhibit strong spatial dispersion even in the very large wavelength limit. This follows from the study of lattices of ideally conducting parallel thin wires (wire media). In fact, our analysis reveals that the description of this medium by means of a local dispersive uniaxial dielectric tensor is not complete, leading to unphysical results for the propagation of electromagnetic waves at any frequencies. Since nonlocal constitutive relations have been usually considered in the past as a second-order approximation, meaningful in the short-wavelength limit, the aforementioned result presents a relevant theoretical interest. In addition, since such wire media have been recently used as a constituent of some discrete artificial media (or metamaterials), the reported results open the question of the relevance of the spatial dispersion in the characterization of these artificial media.

Abstract: Experiences from Nordic countries and Canada have shown that the retrieval of the stem volume and mean tree height of a tree or at stand level from laser scanner data performs as well as, or better than, photogrammetric methods, and better than other remote sensing methods. This paper reviews the methods of small-footprint airborne laser scanning for extracting forest inventory data, mainly in the boreal forest zone. The methods are divided into the following categories: extraction of terrain and canopy height model; feature extraction approaches (canopy height distribution and individual-tree-based techniques, techniques based on the synergetic use of aerial images and lidar, and other new approaches); tree species classification and forest growth using laser scanner; and the use of intensity and waveform data in forest information extraction. Despite this, the focus is on methods, some review of quality obtained, especially in the boreal forest area, is included. Several recommendations for future research are given to foster the methodology development.

Abstract: Recent experiments indicate that proton irradiation triggers ferromagnetism in originally nonmagnetic graphite samples while He ion bombardment has a much smaller effect. To understand the origin of irradiation-induced magnetism, we have performed spin-polarized density functional theory calculations of the magnetic properties of the defects which are most likely to appear under irradiation vacancies and vacancy-hydrogen complexes. Both defects are magnetic, but as for the latter we find that H adsorption on one of the vacancy dangling bonds gives rise to a magnetic moment double that of the naked vacancy. We show that for small irradiation doses vacancy-hydrogen complexes result in a macroscopic magnetic signal which agrees well with the experimental values.
