Abstract: A model for a chiral material in which both the permittivity and permeability are equal to zero is discussed. Such a material is referred by us as a ``chiral nihility". It is shown that this exotic material can be realized as a mixture of small helical inclusions. Wave solutions and energy in such a medium are analyzed. It is shown that an extraordinary wave in chiral nihility is a backward wave. Wave reflection and refraction on a chiral nihility interface is also considered. It is shown that a linearly polarized wave normally incident onto this interface produces the wave of "standing phase" and the same wave in the case of oblique incidence causes two refracted waves, one of them with an anomalous refraction.

Abstract: Spin-polarized density functional theory has been used to study the properties of vacancies in a graphene sheet and in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). For graphene, we find that the vacancies are magnetic and the symmetry of the sheet is broken by the distortion of an atom next to the vacancy site. We also studied vacancies in four armchair SWNTs from (3,3) to (6,6) and six zigzag SWNTs from (5,0) to (10,0). Our calculations demonstrate that vacancies can change the electronic structure of SWNTs, converting some metallic nanotubes to semiconductors and vice versa. Metallic nanotubes with vacancies exhibit ferro- or ferrimagnetism, whereas some semiconducting nanotubes with vacancies show an antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic properties depend on chiralities of the tubes, the configuration of the vacancy and the concentration of the vacancies.

Abstract: This paper proposes an energy efficient collaborative cyclostationary spectrum sensing approach for cognitive radio systems. An existing statistical hypothesis test for the presence of cyclostationarity is extended to multiple cyclic frequencies and its asymptotic distributions are established. Collaborative test statistics are proposed for the fusion of local test statistics of the secondary users, and a censoring technique in which only informative test statistics are transmitted to the fusion center (FC) during the collaborative detection is further proposed for improving energy efficiency in mobile applications. Moreover, a technique for numerical approximation of the asymptotic distribution of the censored FC test statistic is proposed. The proposed tests are nonparametric in the sense that no assumptions on data or noise distributions are required. In addition, the tests allow dichotomizing between the desired signal and interference. Simulation experiments are provided that show the benefits of the proposed cyclostationary approach compared to energy detection, the importance of collaboration among spatially displaced secondary users for overcoming shadowing and fading effects, as well as the reliable performance of the proposed algorithms even in very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes and under strict communication rate constraints for collaboration overhead.

Abstract: A 122-channel d.c. SQUID magnetometer with a helmet-shaped detector array covering the subject's head has been operational in the Low Temperature Laboratory of the Helsinki University of Technology since June 1992. The new system allows simultaneous recording of magnetic activity all over the head. The probe employs 122 planar first-order thin-film gradiometers in dual units with two exactly orthogonal channels at 61 measurement sites. The performance of the device is analyzed and compared with more conventional axial gradiometer arrays by considering signal-to-noise ratios, spatial sampling theory, confidence intervals for the estimated equivalent current dipole positions, and information-theoretical channel capacity. The signal-to-noise ratio and the resolution of the planar and axial arrays with the same number of channels are found practically equal. The number of channels and their spacing in our new Neuromag-122 system are found fully adequate for neuromagnetic measurements. An example of whole cortex recordings of auditory evoked brain activity is presented and analyzed.
