TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the income level of a country's tourist arrival and empirically examined its impact on economic growth and environmental pollution in a sample of eight Mediterranean countries.
Abstract: This paper is the first of its kind to measure the income level of a country’s tourist arrival and empirically examine its impact on economic growth and environmental pollution in a sample of eight Mediterranean countries. The paper undertakes annual data from 1995 to 2014 and employs quantile regression models, autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) estimations, and a heterogeneity causality test. The empirical results show that the income level of a country’s tourist arrival, across all quantiles, plays an important role in promoting economic development. However, the role of the income level of a country’s tourist arrival on environmental pollution varies with the changes in quantiles. More specifically, income level of a country’s tourist arrival has a positive impact on environmental pollution for the lower quantiles, while it has a negative impact for higher quantiles. The findings from panel ARDL models confirm that the income level of a country’s tourist arrival has positive and negative impacts on economic growth and emissions, respectively. Given these results, these findings provide information to take the necessary actions to ensure sustainable tourism development, i.e., the expansion of the tourism industry without harming the environment in the Mediterranean countries.

TL;DR: In this article, the optical Sagnac effect was used to enhance or suppress phonon lasing by coupling an optomechanical system to a spinning resonator and then driving the coupled system from one side or the other.
Abstract: Phonon lasing (coherent mechanical amplification) is a key element in phononic engineering. A one\penalty1000-\hskip0ptway phonon laser would be an indispensable tool to explore chiral light\penalty1000-\hskip0ptsound interactions or to drive chiral phonon devices, yet has remained elusive. This study proposes a strategy to achieve such a device, by coupling an optomechanical system to a spinning resonator. Through the optical Sagnac effect, enhancement or suppression of phonon lasing can be achieved by driving the coupled system from one side or the other. This strategy provides a versatile way to operate spinning devices for applications in directional phonon control, sound sensing, and topological acoustics.

TL;DR: Insight is provided into the effect of food emulsifiers on the release rates of the curcumin from calcium alginate beads and will be helpful for the application of the systems in controlled release of other hydrophobic drug.
Abstract: Curcumin-loaded alginate beads, which contain different food emulsifiers, have been prepared using CaCl2 as the cross-linking agent. The controlled release of the curcumin from the beads was investigated at room temperature. For calcium alginate/Span-80/Tween-80 (A/S/T) formulations, almost all of the curcumin loaded in the beads was released into the medium within about 20 h, and the release rates could be regulated by changing the concentration of both Tween-80 and Span-80. However, for the systems of calcium alginate/Q-12A/F-18A (A/Q/F), about 60% of the curcumin loaded in the beads was released at the end of experiments. The studies of scanning electron microscopy indicated that the microstructure of the walls of beads could significantly vary with the concentration or type of emulsifiers. The Fourier transform infrared spectral measurements confirmed that the interactions between calcium alginate and polyglycerol fatty acid esters were stronger than that between calcium alginate and Tween-80/Span-80....

TL;DR: In this article, the progress of Ti-based electrode materials over the last two years, covering their classification and key factors (electrical conductivity, ion diffusion, volume variation, capacity and operating voltage) of the electrode design for SIB, SIHC, and CDI applications are discussed.
Abstract: Owing to the natural abundance and high safety, electrochemical sodium-ion storage and removal devices are considered as promising candidates for large-scale energy storage and water purification systems. When used as the key component of sodium ion batteries (SIBs), sodium ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs), and capacitive deionization (CDI) devices, the electrode architecture and composition need to be precisely designed to achieve high capacity, rate performance, and long life span. Among various sodium hosting materials, titanium-based electrodes have been intensively investigated owing to their appropriate operating voltage, small strain expansion, fast rate capability, environmental friendliness, safety, and low costs. In this review, we discuss the progress of Ti-based electrode materials over the last two years, covering their classification and key factors (electrical conductivity, ion diffusion, volume variation, capacity and operating voltage) of the electrode design for SIB, SIHC, and CDI applications. The architectural concepts, synthesis methods, and microstructural and compositional control of Ti-based electrodes are also discussed. Our perspectives on current impediments and the future research direction are finally discussed. This review inspires us to propose new chemical strategies that can greatly improve the electrochemical performance.
