Abstract: Conversation between two people is usually of MIXED-INITIATIVE, with CONTROL over the conversation being transferred from one person to another. We apply a set of rules for the transfer of control to 4 sets of dialogues consisting of a total of 1862 turns. The application of the control rules lets us derive domain-independent discourse structures. The derived structures indicate that initiative plays a role in the structuring of discourse. In order to explore the relationship of control and initiative to discourse processes like centering, we analyze the distribution of four different classes of anaphora for two data sets. This distribution indicates that some control segments are hierarchically related to others. The analysis suggests that discourse participants often mutually agree to a change of topic. We also compared initiative in Task Oriented and Advice Giving dialogues and found that both allocation of control and the manner in which control is transferred is radically different for the two dialogue types. These differences can be explained in terms of collaborative planning principles.

Abstract: A method for optimizing the cost of searches through a multimedia repository is disclosed where the repository contains a plurality of objects having at least two different attributes such as color in a newspaper photograph and text in the subtitle. The method comprises selecting a ranking expression, translating the ranking expression into resulting filter conditions and then optimizing the resulting filter conditions to perform the search. A database look-up step is included which determines the cost of performing searches over the various subconditions of the filter condition. The least costly subcondition is searched first to retrieve objects from the multimedia repository. The remaining subconditions are then evaluated on the retrieved objects using either a search step or probe step depending upon the determined cost to perform each. A further database look-up step predicts a grade of match necessary in the translated ranking expression to retrieve at least the number of objects requested in the search.

Abstract: Data preprocessing is an indispensable step in effective data analysis. It prepares data for data mining and machine learning, which aim to turn data into business intelligence or knowledge. Feature selection is a preprocessing technique commonly used on high-dimensional data. Feature selection studies how to select a subset or list of attributes or variables that are used to construct models describing data. Its purposes include reducing dimensionality, removing irrelevant and redundant features, reducing the amount of data needed for learning, improving algorithms' predictive accuracy, and increasing the constructed models' comprehensibility. This article considers feature-selection overfitting with small-sample classifier design; feature selection for unlabeled data; variable selection using ensemble methods; minimum redundancy-maximum relevance feature selection; and biological relevance in feature selection for microarray data.

Abstract: Selective laser melting involves melting and solidification of metal powder particles in a track-by-track and layer-by-layer method to fabricate 3D parts. The present investigation focuses on understanding the effect of laser power and scan speed on the evolution of melt pool, porosity and multiple thermal cycling effects on the microstructure in parts fabricated using selective laser melting. In this study, Ti-6Al-4V pre-alloyed powder was used to produce single-track deposits and bulk parts. Using different combinations of laser power and scan speeds, single-track deposits and bulk parts were produced. The cross-sections of the single-track deposits and bulk samples were prepared for metallographic observations and the melt pool shape and size and porosity were evaluated. When a low energy density was applied the un-melted powder particles produced irregularly shaped porosity, and a high energy density resulted in rounded porosity, which was due to keyhole effects. The samples produced with a proper combination of power and speeds were fully dense. Further, microstructural development under the influence of process condition was highlighted. Overall, the study demonstrates a good correlation between the single-track melt pool geometries, porosity in bulk parts and also demonstrates the microstructural inhomogeneity during deposition.

Abstract: Provided herein is a method and apparatus for host transparent storage controller failover and failback. A controller is capable of assuming the identity of a failed controller while continuing to respond to its own SCSI ID or IDs in such a way that all SCSI IDs and associated units (LUNS) of the failed controller are effectively taken over by the surviving controller. This "failover" behavior is transparent to any attached host computers and is treated by such attached hosts as a powerfail condition. The symmetric operation of returning the targets (IDs) and units (LUNs) to the previously failing controller ("failback") is likewise transparent.
