TL;DR: The problem of bimodal emotion recognition is described and the use of probabilistic graphical models when fusing the different modalities is advocated.
Abstract: Recent technological advances have enabled human users to interact with computers in ways previously unimaginable. Beyond the confines of the keyboard and mouse, new modalities for human-computer interaction such as voice, gesture, and force-feedback are emerging. However, one necessary ingredient for natural interaction is still missing - emotions. This paper describes the problem of bimodal emotion recognition and advocates the use of probabilistic graphical models when fusing the different modalities. We test our audio-visual emotion recognition approach on 38 subjects with 11 HCI-related affect states. The experimental results show that the average person-dependent emotion recognition accuracy is greatly improved when both visual and audio information are used in classification.

TL;DR: A high level overview of a virtual machine placement system in which an autonomic controller dynamically manages the mapping of virtual machines onto physical hosts in accordance with policies specified by the user is presented.
Abstract: We present a high level overview of a virtual machine placement system in which an autonomic controller dynamically manages the mapping of virtual machines onto physical hosts in accordance with policies specified by the user. By closely monitoring virtual machine activity and employing advanced policies for dynamic workload placement, such an autonomic solution can achieve substantial cost savings from better utilization of computing resources and less frequent overload situations.

TL;DR: A reliability model, and a reliability analysis technique for component-based software, using scenarios of component interactions, is introduced and a probabilistic model named Component-Dependency Graph (CDG) is constructed.
Abstract: This paper introduces a reliability model, and a reliability analysis technique for component-based software. The technique is named Scenario-Based Reliability Analysis (SBRA). Using scenarios of component interactions, we construct a probabilistic model named Component-Dependency Graph (CDG). Based on CDG, a reliability analysis algorithm is developed to analyze the reliability of the system as a function of reliabilities of its architectural constituents. An extension of the proposed model and algorithm is also developed for distributed software systems. The proposed approach has the following benefits: 1) It is used to analyze the impact of variations and uncertainties in the reliability of individual components, subsystems, and links between components on the overall reliability estimate of the software system. This is particularly useful when the system is built partially or fully from existing off-the-shelf components; 2) It is suitable for analyzing the reliability of distributed software systems because it incorporates link and delivery channel reliabilities; 3) The technique is used to identify critical components, interfaces, and subsystems; and to investigate the sensitivity of the application reliability to these elements; 4) The approach is applicable early in the development lifecycle, at the architecture level. Early detection of critical architecture elements, those that affect the overall reliability of the system the most, is useful in delegating resources in later development phases.

TL;DR: An overview of RF electronics in portable transceivers is provided and design issues as well as current work toward achieving both high performance and low cost are described.
Abstract: As wireless products such as cellular phones become an everyday part of people's lives, the need for higher performance at lower costs becomes even more important. Overcoming the challenges involved in the design of radio-frequency (RF) transceivers can help meet this need. This article provides an overview of RF electronics in portable transceivers and describes design issues as well as current work toward achieving both high performance and low cost. To understand the implications in the design of RF integrated circuits (ICs) we look at the properties of the mobile communications environment. We then study receiver and transmitter architectures and their viability in present IC technologies. An example of an RF transceiver is given and the design of transceiver building blocks is discussed. We conclude by looking at future directions in RF design.
