Abstract: Gateway routers for real-time networks have the ability to collect delay, loss, and jitter statistics on a per-connection basis. It is possible to use this information not only to monitor the quality of individual voice calls and other real-time connections, but also to evaluate the overall performance of the underlying network. This paper describes a method for monitoring and managing the performance of a real-time data network that supports voice, video and other real-time services. In the described embodiments, the RTCP mechanisms of RTP for sender and receiver reporting be used to relay performance information to one or more network monitoring sites for analysis and interpretation. In addition, gateway routers are organized and managed within a hierarchy that allows the monitoring function to localize it view of network conditions within the hierarchy; and the monitoring of network performance can occur on various time scales.

Abstract: A Transparent Peripheral File System (TPFS) includes a Peripheral File System Adapter (PFSA) which communicates with a host operating system at the vnode level of file operation by packaging such communications for transmission over an I/O system interface, such as SCSI. A file peripheral system remote from the host and in a peripheral relation thereto is responsive to the PFSA, without an intervening file server. The peripheral file system produces hardware commands for the mass storage device whose space it manages. The peripheral file system may be embedded in a mass storage device, a lump in the interconnecting interface cable, or a smart interface card in the backplane of the host. The peripheral file system may include a daisy chain connection to allow the propagation of vnode communication to other peripheral file systems. In this way a hierarchy of peripheral file systems may be physically mounted to one another in a way that corresponds to how they are logically mounted. A Character To File Translator (CFX) allows a TPFS to emulate raw mode access, even if the host system is not equipped with a vnode file operation interface. CFX does this by converting to and from streams of characters communicated with an application using this ersatz raw mode, while instead of storing the data on the storage medium itself, actually relying upon the remote peripheral file system for storing, or having stored, the streams of characters as a file.

Abstract: A device and method supporting the identification and correction of firmware and/or software errors is described. Upon the occurrence of a firmware/software error or exception, an embodiment in accordance with the present invention may gather parameters for identifying the error or exception, and the execution environment in which the error occurred, and may communicate the parameters or an identifier to a server, to retrieve update information for correcting the firmware/software error or exception. The execution environment may be single or multi-threaded, and may be a java virtual machine. The device may restart/reboot during the update process, and may log an error if update information is not available to correct the error or exception. The device may communicate the error log information to the server via the communication network. The communication network may be a wireless network.

Abstract: Increases in server power dissipation time placed significant pressure on traditional data center thermal management systems. Traditional systems utilize computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units to pressurize a raised floor plenum with cool air that is passed to equipment racks via ventilation tiles distributed throughout the raised floor. Temperature is typically controlled at the hot air return of the CRAC units away from the equipment racks. Due primarily to a lack of distributed environmental sensing, these CRAC systems are often operated conservatively resulting in reduced computational density and added operational expense. This paper introduces a data center environmental control system that utilizes a distributed sensor network to manipulate conventional CRAC units within an air-cooled environment. The sensor network is attached to standard racks and provides a direct measurement of the environment in close proximity to the computational resources. A calibration routine is used to characterize the response of each sensor in the network to individual CRAC actuators. A cascaded control algorithm is used to evaluate the data from the sensor network and manipulate supply air temperature and flow rate from individual CRACs to ensure thermal management while reducing operational expense. The combined controller and sensor network has been deployed in a production data center environment. Results from the algorithm will be presented that demonstrate the performance of the system and evaluate the energy savings compared with conventional data center environmental control architecture.
