TL;DR: In this paper, a touch-sensitive display screen is enhanced by a touch sensitive control area that extends beyond the edges of the display screen, referred to as a gesture area, allowing a user to activate commands using a gesture vocabulary.
Abstract: A touch-sensitive display screen is enhanced by a touch-sensitive control area that extends beyond the edges of the display screen. The touch-sensitive area outside the display screen, referred to as a "gesture area," allows a user to activate commands using a gesture vocabulary. In one aspect, the present invention allows some commands to be activated by inputting a gesture within the gesture area. Other commands can be activated by directly manipulating on-screen objects. Yet other commands can be activated by beginning a gesture within the gesture area, and finishing it on the screen (or vice versa), and/or by performing input that involves contemporaneous con-tact with both the gesture area and the screen.

TL;DR: In this paper, a file backup facility is provided for a community of personal computers (PC1-3) linked to a central station (10) that includes a mass storage device.
Abstract: A file backup facility is provided for a community of personal computers (PC1-3) linked to a central station (10) that includes a mass storage device (14). The backup facility enables a user to select files for backup to the mass storage device (14) and then subsequently to restore selected ones of the backed-up files. Concurrent backup from several personal computers is permitted with the files subject to backup being divided into blocks and the blocks interleaved for storage on the mass storage device (14). The selection of files for backup or restore is effected by presenting to the user a directory listing all relevant subdirectories and files and permitting the user to select/deselect files individual or by directory.

TL;DR: This work describes the results of secure distributed computation using generic constructions that can be applied to any function that has an efficient representation as a circuit, and discusses their efficiency and relevance to privacy preserving computation of data mining algorithms.
Abstract: Research in secure distributed computation, which was done as part of a larger body of research in the theory of cryptography, has achieved remarkable results. It was shown that non-trusting parties can jointly compute functions of their different inputs while ensuring that no party learns anything but the defined output of the function. These results were shown using generic constructions that can be applied to any function that has an efficient representation as a circuit. We describe these results, discuss their efficiency, and demonstrate their relevance to privacy preserving computation of data mining algorithms. We also show examples of secure computation of data mining algorithms that use these generic constructions.

TL;DR: The zero-phonon transition rate of a nitrogen-vacancy center is enhanced by a factor of ∼70 by coupling to a photonic crystal resonator fabricated in monocrystalline diamond using standard semiconductor fabrication techniques.
Abstract: The zero-phonon transition rate of a nitrogen-vacancy center is enhanced by a factor of ∼70 by coupling to a photonic crystal resonator fabricated in monocrystalline diamond using standard semiconductor fabrication techniques. Photon correlation measurements on the spectrally filtered zero-phonon line show antibunching, a signature that the collected photoluminescence is emitted primarily by a single nitrogen-vacancy center. The linewidth of the coupled nitrogen-vacancy center and the spectral diffusion are characterized using high-resolution photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy.

TL;DR: A new, sequential algorithm is presented, which is faster in typical applications and is especially advantageous for image sequences: the KL basis calculation is done with much lower delay and allows for dynamic updating of image databases.
Abstract: The Karhunen-Loeve (KL) transform is an optimal method for approximating a set of vectors or images, which was used in image processing and computer vision for several tasks such as face and object recognition. Its computational demands and its batch calculation nature have limited its application. Here we present a new, sequential algorithm for calculating the KL basis, which is faster in typical applications and is especially advantageous for image sequences: the KL basis calculation is done with much lower delay and allows for dynamic updating of image databases. Systematic tests of the implemented algorithm show that these advantages are indeed obtained with the same accuracy available from batch KL algorithms.
