TL;DR: In this article, the role of the Pauli principle in the interaction between clusters in the overlapping region of them has been clarified, and it is shown that both the characteristic inner oscillation and the almost energy-independent nodes of the relative wave function are produced by this orthogonality condition.
Abstract: The Pauli principle characterizes. the relative state between clusters in the overlapping region of them. A theory to clarify the role of the Pauli principle in the interaction be tween clusters in a simple way' is proposed. The equation of motion, for the relative state, obtained as a consequence of the total antisymmetrization, excludes naturally the states for bidden by the Pauli principle. The relative state is mainly determined by the orthogonality . condition to the forbidden states for the inside and by a local potential for the outside. It is shown that both the characteristic inner oscillation and the almost energy-independent nodes of the relative wave function, which appear in the a:-a: scattering and are interpreted as the origin of the effective repulsive core, are produced by this orthogonality condition. The fea tures of the a:-a: scattering are clarified on the basis of the theory proposed.

TL;DR: It is concluded that an intact molecule of myosin is required for development of binding properties upon heating, and heavy and light meromyosins have little influence on binding properties.
Abstract: SUMMARY —Myosin and actin were isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle. The gelation of myosin, actin and actomyosin, as well as of heavy and light meromyosins derived from myosin by trypsin treatment, by heat was studied in various systems. The data indicate that the heat gelling properties of these protein solutions do not run parallel with those of saline model systems composed of these proteins and stroma. Actin does not exert any influence on the binding properties of the system, but when F-actin and myosin A were both present the resulting binding properties were considerably improved. Since heavy and light meromyosins have little influence on binding properties, it may be concluded that an intact molecule of myosin is required for development of binding properties upon heating.

TL;DR: An anomalous sex-chromosome constitution was observed by chance in a case of phenotypically normal female golden hamster in which 44 chromosomes with a karyotype which was indistinguishable in general appearance from that of the normal male.
Abstract: An anomalous sex-chromosome constitution was observed by chance in a case of phenotypically normal female golden hamster. Bone marrow metaphases of this animal showed 44 chromosomes with a karyotype which was indistinguishable in general appearance from that of the normal male. Two tentative interpretations were made for the sex-determining mechanism of the present specimen: one is the XY constitution in which the Y chromosome had lost its male factors due to the interchange of genetic materials between the X and the Y at the time of meiotic segregation, and the other deals with a partial short arm deletion in one of the two X chromosomes.

TL;DR: Clear oscillations at the level of enzymatic reactions have been reported in the glycolytic system and in the horse-radish peroxidase systems which oxidize reduced pyridine nucleotide4 and indoleacetate or di-hydroxyfumarate.
Abstract: PERIODIC phenomena are common in biology, and the nature of the oscillator which drives them is of great interest. Recently clear oscillations at the level of enzymatic reactions have been reported in the glycolytic system1–3. Damped oscillations have also been found in the horse-radish peroxidase systems which oxidize reduced pyridine nucleotide4,5 and indoleacetate or di-hydroxyfumarate6. The peroxidase system oscillated between ferriperoxidase and compound III (possibly ferriperoxidase–O2− complex) in the same oscillatory cycle of oxygen consumption. The conditions which gave stable oscillations were rather limited and the oscillation ceased after several cycles even when the reaction was started from an optimal condition. Acid pH favoured oscillation5.

TL;DR: Three transplantable tumor cell lines exposed to Friend virus had a low success rate of transplantation into susceptible rats, and even when transplantation was accomplished, the tumor cells regressed spontaneously.
Abstract: Three transplantable tumor cell lines (WST-5 sarcoma, Takeda sarcoma, and DLT I ung carcinoma) exposed to Friend virus had a low success rate of transplantation into susceptible rats, and even when transplantation was accomplished, the tumor cells regressed spontaneously. Of the 3 lines, the rapid growth rate of the Takeda sarcoma resulted in early death of the host, and the effect of infection with Friend virus could not always be discerned. When the host was previously immunized with Friend virus, however, the effect became as clearly discernible as in the two other lines. This was not because the rat tumor cell showed the cytopathic effect of Friend virus nor because of the environmental change of the host brought about by Friend virus inoculation, but was probably because of the production of Friend virus-related antigen on the surface of the tumor cell resulting from Friend virus infection. The significance of using a noncytopathic virus, which altered the surface of tumor cells and which was too weakly infectious to the host to modify the growth of tumor, is discussed.-J Nat Cancer Inst 42: 413-419,1969.

TL;DR: The data suggest that these 2 stimuli for HGH release exert their actions through different mechanisms, and administration of 9 mg/day of dexamethasone for 2 days suppressed the insulininduced H GH release, but did not affect the arginine-induced Hgh release.
Abstract: With a single iv injection of 0.1 U/kg body weight of insulin or a 30-min iv infusion of 0.5 g/kg body weight of arginine monochloride, plasma growth hormone (HGH) of healthy young men increased to 45.1 ± 7.52 (mean±sd) ng/ml and 36.6 ± 9.67 ng/ml, respectively. Plasma corticosteroids, on the other hand, increased by 9.0 ± 3.78 μg/100 ml with insulin, and showed a gradual decline, which seemed to be a normal diurnal rhythm, with arginine. Administration of 9 mg/day of dexamethasone for 2 days suppressed the insulininduced HGH release, but did not affect the arginine-induced HGH release. These data suggest that these 2 stimuli for HGH release exert their actions through different mechanisms.

TL;DR: The results suggest that fibrous elements are involved in the test Growth, and that there is a different mechanism of the test growth between summer and winter specimens.
Abstract: Growth of the test ofStrongylocentrotus intermedius was examined with the aid of tetracycline. In summer specimens, tetracycline fluorescence was not observable in the plates, except in the apical system and its adjacent area. An array of fibrous elements with a milky white autofluorescence was oriented perpendicularly to each suture line. In winter specimens the elements were evident only in demineralized sections. The growth gradient of each plate estimated on winter specimens was as follows: longitudinal sture » inner surface = mammelon and part of boss in tubercle > latitudinal suture > outer surface of base of spine shaft > outer surface of plate itself. The mature test as a whole increases in size by two modes of growth, an addition of new plates to the apical system and an accretion on fixed sites of each plate. The results suggest that fibrous elements are involved in the test growth, and that there is a different mechanism of the test growth between summer and winter specimens. The apical system may be equipped with a specific mechanism of calcification which permits an active formation of new plates throughout the year.

Abstract: The chromosomes were studied in five species of cobitiid loaches with the application of current air-drying techniques. It was found that Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, Barbatula toni, Lefua nikkonis and Cobitis delicata had the same diploid number of 50. Comparison of karyotypes revealed the chromosome morphology characteristic of each species. In contrast, Cobitis biwae was remarkable by having 96 chromosomes. No evidence for sexual difference of chromosomes was obtained in the species studied here.

TL;DR: The author isolated an etiological agent from the infected fish to determine the taxonomic position of the isolate, which was found to be a non-motile Aeromonas and designated as a new subspecies of A. salmonicida subsp.
Abstract: Outbreaks of furunculosis of salmonid fish are often observed at hatcheries in Hokkaido, Japan, when the fish were stored untill to mature. Usually, the outbreaks have been believed to be due to the infection of Aeromonas salmonicida. The author isolated an etiological agent from the infected fish. To determine the taxonomic position of the isolate, a detailed study was made on morphological and physiological properties. As the results, the isolate was found to be a non-motile Aeromonas. It was different from A. salmonicida or A. salmonicida subsp. achromogenes on the basis as shown in Table 4, to warrant its designation as a new subspecies of A. salmonicida.(In the next paper, part 2, the name of this subspecies will be proposed.)

TL;DR: It was shown through phase contrast microscopic observations that sarcoplasmic proteins, participating in the glycolytic cycle, may play a role in the fragmentation of the myofibrils.
Abstract: SUMMARY: Changes in the morphology of myofibrils prepared from chicken pectoral muscle during post-mortem storage at 5°C were examined by light and electron microscopy. When the 24-hr stored samples were blendorized, electron micrographs showed two types of destruction in the Z-lines of sarcomeres and myofibrillar fragments: (1) The degradation and/or disappearance of Z-lines. (2) The breakdown of the junction of Z-line and I-filaments. A change in the state of the Z-line and the junction of the Z-line and I-filaments appeared to be indispensable for the fragmentation of the myofibrils. It was also shown through phase contrast microscopic observations that sarcoplasmic proteins, participating in the glycolytic cycle, may play a role in the fragmentation of the myofibrils. Evidence has not been obtained, to date, on the participation of proteolytic enzymes in the fragmentation phenomenon.

TL;DR: The close temporal relationship with a definite phase shift observed between CRF activity and plasma corticosterone level appears to support the concept that the diurnal rhythm of the pituitary-adrenal axis is a direct reflection of the rhythmicity ofCRF activity in the median eminence of the rat.
Abstract: Diurnal periodicity of the hypothalamic content of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) was determined in the normal male rat by the intrapituitary microinjection method. It was found that the CRF activity in the rat hypothalamus showed a definite diurnal variation, having the peak value at about 18: 00 and the minimum at 4: 00 or 8: 00 under the lighting regimen of 6: 00 to 19: 00 of day light followed by 11 hrs. of darkness. The close temporal relationship with a definite phase shift observed between CRF activity and plasma corticosterone level appears to support the concept that the diurnal rhythm of the pituitary-adrenal axis is a direct reflection of the rhythmicity of CRF activity in the median eminence of the rat.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the fluorescence spectra of polystyrene solutions in various solvents and extrapolated the values to the average density of segments in a polymer molecule.
Abstract: The fluorescence spectra of polystyrene solutions have been measured in various solvents. The ratio of the intensity ID of the excimer (short living excited dimer) band to the intensity IM of the monomer band depends on the solvent. The values extrapolated to diluted solutions may be related to the average density of segments in a polymer molecule. Above concentrations of 0.1 g/100 ml, the ratio ID/IM increases with increasing concentration, and the peak position of the excimer band shifts to a longer wavelength.
