TL;DR: In this paper, the chemical shift technique and curve fitting technique were applied to the C1s peak in the X-ray photoelectron spectrum of the film to determine the sp 3 /sp 2 bonding ratio of the films.
Abstract: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy were used to determine some of the properties of diamond like amorphous carbon films deposited using saddle field glow discharge of methane. By applying the chemical shift technique and curve fitting technique to the C1s peak in the X-ray photoelectron spectrum of the film, we were able to determine the sp 3 /sp 2 bonding ratio of the films. The ratio from this method was in agreement (±1%) with that calculated from the X-ray excited Auger electron spectrum of the same film. The method was also applied to a-C:H films doped with different impurities (boron and phosphorus) in amounts varying from 1% to 20%. We found that the sp 3 /sp 2 ratio of the film was dependent on the deposition parameters and on types of impurities and their concentrations.

TL;DR: Li et al. as mentioned in this paper found that firms linked to members of China's supreme political elites obtained a price discount ranging from 55.4% to 59.9% compared with those without the same connections.
Abstract: Using data on over a million land transactions during 2004–2016 where local governments are the sole seller, we find that firms linked to members of China's supreme political elites—the Politburo—obtained a price discount ranging from 55.4% to 59.9% compared with those without the same connections. These firms also purchased slightly more land. In return, the provincial party secretaries who provided the discount to these “princeling” firms are 23.4% more likely to be promoted to positions of national leadership. To curb corruption, President Xi Jinping stepped up investigations and strengthened personnel control at the province level. Using a spatially matched sample (e.g., within a 500-meter radius), we find a reduction in corruption of between 42.6% and 31.5% in the provinces either targeted by the central inspection teams or whose party secretary was replaced by one appointed by Xi. Accordingly, this crackdown on corruption has also significantly reduced the promotional prospects of those local officials who rely on supplying a discount to get ahead.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined how EE institutional weakness at the national level translates into competitive disadvantage at the firm level and explained how these strategic choices affect firm boundaries, internal organization, and the nature of competitive advantage for firms in EEs.
Abstract: Indigenous emerging economy (EE) firms are increasingly competing in global markets or against multinational corporations (MNCs) in their home markets. But their institutional context at the national and local levels often suffers from what has been termed “institutional weakness” which is believed to put them at a competitive disadvantage on the global playing field. Yet little is known about how EE institutional weakness at the national level translates into competitive disadvantage at the firm level. In this perspectives paper, we examine this shortcoming in the literature. We utilize three popular theories of the firm—neoclassical economics, the resource-based view, and the nexus of contracts view—to examine how EE institutional weakness at the national level affects strategic choices at the firm level. We then explain how these strategic choices affect firm boundaries, internal organization, and the nature of competitive advantage for firms in EEs.

TL;DR: In this article, a theory-based, short form measure of cultural intelligence (SFCQ) is proposed to capture the original theoretical intent of a multifaceted culture general form of intelligence that is related to effective intercultural interactions.
Abstract: This article reports the development and validation of a theory-based, short form measure of cultural intelligence (SFCQ). The SFCQ captures the original theoretical intent of a multifaceted culture general form of intelligence that is related to effective intercultural interactions. The validity of the scale is established with 3526 participants in five language groups from around the world. Results provide evidence for construct and criterion-related validity of the measure, and indicate that cultural intelligence is a single latent factor reflected in three intermediate facets. In support of construct validity the measure is modestly related to but distinct from emotional intelligence and personality and correlates positively with several indicators of multicultural experience. With regard to criterion-related validity, it relates as predicted to several dimensions of intercultural effectiveness. Implications for the measurement and understanding of culture and the influence of culture on management practice are discussed.
