Abstract: Is it possible to leverage WiFi signals collected in bedrooms to monitor a person's sleep? In this paper, we show that with off-the-shelf WiFi devices, fine-grained sleep information like a person's respiration, sleeping postures and rollovers can be successfully extracted. We do this by introducing Wi-Sleep, the first sleep monitoring system based on WiFi signals. Wi-Sleep adopts off-the-shelf WiFi devices to continuously collect the fine-grained wireless channel state information (CSI) around a person. From the CSI, Wi-Sleep extracts rhythmic patterns associated with respiration and abrupt changes due to the body movement. Compared to existing sleep monitoring systems that usually require special devices attached to human body (i.e. Probes, head belt, and wrist band), Wi-Sleep is completely contact less. In addition, different from many vision-based sleep monitoring systems, Wi-Sleep is robust to low-light environments and does not raise privacy concerns. Preliminary testing results show that the Wi-Sleep can reliably track a person's respiration and sleeping postures in different conditions.

Abstract: One important application of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in construction is as FRP jackets to confine concrete in the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, as FRP confinement can enhance both the compressive strength and ultimate strain of concrete. For the safe and economic design of FRP jackets, the stress–strain behavior of FRP-confined concrete under cyclic compression needs to be properly understood and modeled. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the behavior of FRP-confined concrete under cyclic compression. Test results obtained from CFRP-wrapped concrete cylinders are presented and examined, which allows a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, including the existence of an envelope curve and the cumulative effect of loading cycles. The results are also compared with two existing stress–strain models for FRP-confined concrete, one for monotonic loading and another one for cyclic loading. The monotonic stress–strain model of Lam and Teng is shown to be able to provide accurate predictions of the envelope curve, but the only existing cyclic stress–strain model is shown to require improvement.

Abstract: A stretchable electronic device can retain its functionalities during high-level mechanical deformation, and stimulates the applications in the field of wearable and bio-implantable electronics. Efficient energy storage devices are an indispensable component in stretchable electronic systems. To integrate power supplies together with electronic devices that are mechanically flexible and stretchable, we demonstrate a new kind of stretchable all-solid-state supercapacitor, which consists of two slightly separated polyaniline/graphene electrodes in a wavy shape, with a phosphoric acid/polyvinyl alcohol gel as the solid-state electrolyte and separator. The as-fabricated wavy shaped supercapacitor was encapsulated in an elastomeric substrate which can be stretched to a large extent without mechanical degradation. The supercapacitor exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 261 F g−1. Electrochemical cycling testing with the supercapacitor showed 89% capacitance retention over 1000 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. The bending and stretching tests showed that the supercapacitor maintained high mechanical strength and high capacitance simultaneously, even under a strain of 30%. This stretchable all-solid-state supercapacitor shows great potential as an energy storage device for stretchable electronic systems.
