TL;DR: Extensive computer simulations on popular LFC power generation system models which consist of linear, non-linear, and/or high-order items clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed resonance attacks and propose countermeasures on the proposed attacks.
Abstract: Load frequency control (LFC) is widely employed to regulate power plants in modern power generation systems of smart grids. This paper presents a simple and yet powerful type of attacks, referred to as resonance attacks, on LFC power generation systems. Specifically, in a resonance attack, an adversary craftily modifies the input of a power plant according to a resonance source (e.g., rate of change of frequency) to produce a feedback on LFC power generation system, such that the state of the power plant quickly becomes instable. Extensive computer simulations on popular LFC power generation system models which consist of linear, non-linear, and/or high-order items clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed attacks. As the attack has very low computational cost and communication overhead, it is easy to launch in resource-limited devices such as intelligent electronic devices. In our simulations, the attacker keeps modified input within the normal operating range so as to invade plausibility and consistency based attack detection methods and yet the modifications can quickly drive the system beyond the admissible boundary. Another interesting finding is that by maliciously modifying the input such as power load and tie-line signal over multi-area interconnection channels, a multi-area LFC power generation system could become unreliable more quickly than a single-area system. Finally, we propose countermeasures on the proposed attacks.

TL;DR: The authors proposed a neural programmer-interpreter model that learns explicit edit operations (ADD, DELETE, and KEEP) via a NMT-based approach, which outperforms previous state-of-the-art neural sentence simplification models.
Abstract: We present the first sentence simplification model that learns explicit edit operations (ADD, DELETE, and KEEP) via a neural programmer-interpreter approach. Most current neural sentence simplification systems are variants of sequence-to-sequence models adopted from machine translation. These methods learn to simplify sentences as a byproduct of the fact that they are trained on complex-simple sentence pairs. By contrast, our neural programmer-interpreter is directly trained to predict explicit edit operations on targeted parts of the input sentence, resembling the way that humans perform simplification and revision. Our model outperforms previous state-of-the-art neural sentence simplification models (without external knowledge) by large margins on three benchmark text simplification corpora in terms of SARI (+0.95 WikiLarge, +1.89 WikiSmall, +1.41 Newsela), and is judged by humans to produce overall better and simpler output sentences.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors proposed a bridge-tree structure to enforce the similarity between neighbor nodes, where local regressors partition the data space into multiple overlapping subspaces to tackle heterogeneous data and gating networks learn continuity-aware weights.
Abstract: Age estimation is an important yet very challenging problem in computer vision. Existing methods for age estimation usually apply a divide-and-conquer strategy to deal with heterogeneous data caused by the non-stationary aging process. However, the facial aging process is also a continuous process, and the continuity relationship between different components has not been effectively exploited. In this paper, we propose BridgeNet for age estimation, which aims to mine the continuous relation between age labels effectively. The proposed BridgeNet consists of local regressors and gating networks. Local regressors partition the data space into multiple overlapping subspaces to tackle heterogeneous data and gating networks learn continuity aware weights for the results of local regressors by employing the proposed bridge-tree structure, which introduces bridge connections into tree models to enforce the similarity between neighbor nodes. Moreover, these two components of BridgeNet can be jointly learned in an end-to-end way. We show experimental results on the MORPH II, FG-NET and Chalearn LAP 2015 datasets and find that BridgeNet outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system for sharing data among a group of a plurality of mobile devices without requiring a database or server to centrally store the shared data is presented, where each group member individually stores the data individually while controlling the manner in which the data is updated.
Abstract: A method and system are provided for sharing data amongst a group of a plurality of mobile devices without requiring a database or server to centrally store the shared data. The shared data is instead stored by each group member individually while controlling the manner in which the shared data is updated. The shared data can be used to manage tasks in a group project. To manage updates, the shared data is atomized such that individual databases in the shared data are separated or otherwise delineated into one or more records, each record having associated therewith, a value. To maintain a common copy of the shared data at each device, any update is sent to all group members using an intermediate message exchange service that is capable of transmitting a sent message to more than one recipient if necessary. In this way, the updates are multicast to the group. To manage the content of the shared data, each update comprises one or more changes to a current copy of a corresponding record.
