TL;DR: This paper introduces a statistical technique, Support Vector Machines (SVM), which is considered by the Deutsche Bundesbank as an alternative for company rating and confirms that the SVM outperforms both DA and Logit on bootstrapped samples.
Abstract: This paper introduces a statistical technique, Support Vector Machines (SVM), which is considered by the Deutsche Bundesbank as an alternative for company rating A special attention is paid to the features of the SVM which provide a higher accuracy of company classification into solvent and insolvent The advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed The comparison of the SVM with more traditional approaches such as logistic regression (Logit) and discriminant analysis (DA) is made on the Deutsche Bundesbank data of annual income statements and balance sheets of German companies The out-of-sample accuracy tests confirm that the SVM outperforms both DA and Logit on bootstrapped samples

TL;DR: Methods for studying chromosome architecture are described and evaluated and insights about nuclear organization are outlined, which confirm the nucleus to be a complex, highly organized organelle.
Abstract: Determining how chromosomes are positioned and folded within the nucleus is critical to understanding the role of chromatin topology in gene regulation. Several methods are available for studying chromosome architecture, each with different strengths and limitations. Established imaging approaches and proximity ligation-based chromosome conformation capture (3C) techniques (such as DNA-FISH and Hi-C, respectively) have revealed the existence of chromosome territories, functional nuclear landmarks (such as splicing speckles and the nuclear lamina) and topologically associating domains. Improvements to these methods and the recent development of ligation-free approaches, including GAM, SPRITE and ChIA-Drop, are now helping to uncover new aspects of 3D genome topology that confirm the nucleus to be a complex, highly organized organelle.

TL;DR: The results revealed that the initial size of the urban heat island had significant influence on SUHIM, and cities of cooler climates and cities with higher shares of urban green spaces were more affected by additional heat during heat waves.

TL;DR: The authors proposed several deductive imputation procedures to improve the education variable in the IAB employment subsample by using multiple education information available in the data because the employees' education is reported at least once a year.
Abstract: The education variable in the IAB employment subsample has two shortcomings: missing values and inconsistencies with the reporting rule We propose several deductive imputation procedures to improve the variable They mainly use the multiple education information available in the data because the employees' education is reported at least once a year We compare the improved data from the different procedures and the original data in typical applications in labor economics: educational composition of employment, wage inequality, and wage regression We find, that correcting the education variable: (i) shows the educational attainment of the male labor force to be higher than measured with the original data, (ii) gives different values for some measures of wage inequality, and (iii) does not change the estimates in wage regressions much
