TL;DR: This Review outlines the general concept of light-gated catalysis based on photocaged and also photoswitchable systems, and discusses relevant examples of the past and recent literature.
Abstract: Having control over an entity or even an entire process is arguably the ultimate demonstration of its understanding and it will enable its potential to be fully exploited. With this in mind, chemists have not only been creating and optimizing a myriad of different catalysts for most (relevant) chemical reactions over the past decades, but have recently started to implement controlling elements into the catalyst design. These incorporated gates operate upon exposure to suitable control stimuli, and light represents perhaps the scientifically and technologically most attractive stimulus. In principle, irradiation can thereby induce activity and selectivity in a given catalyst system with high spatial and temporal control, leading to an overall localization and amplification of an optical signal and translation into chemical action. While nature has developed and utilized this concept, in particular in the processes of vision and photomovement, such artificial photocontrolled catalyst systems offer unique opportunities and have high potential for future applications. In this Review, we outline the general concept of light-gated catalysis based on photocaged and also photoswitchable systems, and discuss relevant examples of the past and recent literature.

TL;DR: A liquid crystalline polymer film doped with a visible light responsive fluorinated azobenzene capable of continuous chaotic oscillatory motion when exposed to ambient sunlight in air is described.
Abstract: Nature provides much inspiration for the design of materials capable of motion upon exposure to external stimuli, and many examples of such active systems have been created in the laboratory. However, to achieve continuous motion driven by an unchanging, constant stimulus has proven extremely challenging. Here we describe a liquid crystalline polymer film doped with a visible light responsive fluorinated azobenzene capable of continuous chaotic oscillatory motion when exposed to ambient sunlight in air. The presence of simultaneous illumination by blue and green light is necessary for the oscillating behaviour to occur, suggesting that the dynamics of continuous forward and backward switching are causing the observed effect. Our work constitutes an important step towards the realization of autonomous, persistently self-propelling machines and self-cleaning surfaces powered by sunlight.

TL;DR: Hen's egg-specific IgE at the age of 12 months is a valuable marker for subsequent allergic sensitization to allergens that cause asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis.
Abstract: Background: Specific predictors for atopic sensitization in early infancy are prerequisites for preventive intervention studies. Objective: To identify predictors of allergic sensitization to common aeroallergens in infancy, 1314 children in five German cities were followed up from birth (1990) to the age of 3 years. Methods: BLOOD samples were taken from cord blood and at follow-up visits at the ages of 1, 2, and 3 years. Total serum IgE and specific IgE antibodies to common food and inhalant allergens were determined. Results: Among our study population, risk factors for sensitization to indoor and/or outdoor allergens at the age of 3 years were a positive family history, the presence of hen's egg–specific IgE antibodies (G0.35 kU/L), and increased log[total IgE] levels at the age of 12 months. Elevated cord blood IgE was not associated with sensitization to inhalant allergens at the age of 3 years. Egg-specific IgE greater than 2 kU/L in combination with a positive family history of atopy was a highly specific (specificity, 99%) and predictive (positive predictive value, 78%) marker for sensitization to inhalant allergens at 3 years of age. Conclusions: Hen's egg–specific IgE at the age of 12 months is a valuable marker for subsequent allergic sensitization to allergens that cause asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. TL;DR: In the tunneling regime of strong laser field ionization, a substantial fraction of neutral atoms surviving the laser pulse in excited states is measured, confirming the existence of a widely unexplored neutral exit channel (frustrated tunneling ionization).
Abstract: In the tunneling regime of strong laser field ionization we measure a substantial fraction of neutral atoms surviving the laser pulse in excited states. The measured excited neutral atom yield extends over several orders of magnitude as a function of laser intensity. Our findings are compatible with the strong-field tunneling-plus-rescattering model, confirming the existence of a widely unexplored neutral exit channel (frustrated tunneling ionization). Strong experimental support for this mechanism as origin of excited neutral atoms stems from the dependence of the excited neutral yield on the laser ellipticity, which is as expected for a rescattering process. Theoretical support for the proposed mechanism comes from the agreement of the neutral excited state distribution centered at n = 6-10 obtained from both, a full quantum mechanical and a semiclassical calculation, in agreement with the experimental results.
