Abstract: Electrical conductivity can be used to monitor important changes in a food product during pulsed electric field (PEF) processing. Electrical conductivities of selected fruit juices (namely apple, orange, and pineapple juices) and liquid egg products (namely whole egg, yolk, and egg white) were determined online during a PEF treatment. The property was measured at broad processing temperatures ranging from 5 to 55°C. Electrical conductivity increased linearly with increasing temperatures for all the products. The liquid egg products have the highest overall electrical conductivity varying from 0.22 to 1.1 S/m whereas fruit juice products have the lowest electrical conductivity ranging from 0.13 to 0.63 S/m. Regression equations of electrical conductivity as functions of temperature were developed. This paper provides a database and equation correlations of food electrical conductivity that could be used to design and optimize PEF process.

Abstract: Experimental evidence was produced and gathered to demonstrate the distinct nature of nanostructured polymer microcomposites. The case of a polymer composite consisting of a high-content of micrometric quartz with a small adjunct of nanoclay is discussed. Emphasis is put on dielectric behavior studies while some results on thermal characteristics are presented. Overall results strongly support the potential of this class of insulating material for electrotechnical applications.

Abstract: As the need for faster power system dynamic simulations increases, it is essential to develop new algorithms that exploit parallel computing to accelerate those simulations. This paper proposes a parallel algorithm based on a two-level, Schur-complement-based, domain decomposition method. The two-level partitioning provides high parallelization potential (coarse- and fine-grained). In addition, due to the Schur-complement approach used to update the sub-domain interface variables, the algorithm exhibits high global convergence rate. Finally, it provides significant numerical and computational acceleration. The algorithm is implemented using the shared-memory parallel programming model, targeting inexpensive multi-core machines. Its performance is reported on a real system as well as on a large test system combining transmission and distribution networks.

Abstract: Planned islanding application, also known as intentional islanding, is an early utility adaptation of the Microgrid concept that is being promoted by major utilities around the world The main objective of planned islanding projects in Canada is to enhance customer-based power supply reliability on rural feeders by utilizing an appropriately located independent power producer (IPP) This paper considers the process of planned islanding and the necessary steps that need to be taken in order to lead to successful projects Some of the current experience from Canadian utilities in this area are investigated and the additional requirements, in terms of equipment and system studies, which are needed in order to plan for the operation of a planned island project are discussed A case of planned islanding on rural feeders with multiple distributed generation units is also investigated, which represents the target of future projects in this area
