21 Jun 1998TL;DR: In this article, a two-stage control design for a large synchronous-condenser station with two global and one local input signals is presented. And the control design is based on a 2-stage methodology of which first step is built on a powerful pulse-response-based numerical subspace state-space identification algorithm to identify a reduced-order, small-signal MIMO model of the open-loop system.
Abstract: A distributed-measurement technology using the Global Positioning System and accurate phasor measurements units is expected to become the most powerful source of wide-area dynamic information. This paper explores ways of putting this extended real-time knowledge of the power system behavior into use, by means of supplementary feedback loops which improve dynamic and transient system stability and, ultimately, increase the transmission capacity. The control design is based on a 2-stage methodology of which first step is built on a powerful pulse-response-based numerical subspace state-space identification algorithm to identify a reduced-order, small-signal MIMO model of the open-loop system. The second step is to select an appropriate control structure and then tune the stabilizer parameters accordingly. To tackle the most difficult situations, the architecture selected comprises several dynamic feedback loops, each consisting of a high-order differential filter. Controller tuning is then performed by minimizing a selective modal performance index in the parameter space, Adding stability and robustness constraints greatly improves the engineering significance of the resulting design. For illustration, we provide a full design of a three-loop stabilizer for a major synchronous-condenser station an actual power system which simultaneously uses two global and one local input signals. Both linear and nonlinear simulation results clearly demonstrate the added value of wide-area information when properly included in power system stabilizer design.

TL;DR: In this article, the pitting corrosion and the sliding wear resistances of CaviTec coatings produced by high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and deposited onto a 304 stainless steel (SS) were evaluated.
Abstract: FeCrMnCoSi coating (so-called CaviTec alloy) is recognized as an efficient protective measure to extend the service-life of steel components subjected to severe cavitation erosion. Besides this requirement, many applications also demand coatings with proper corrosion and wear resistances. The aim of this study is to evaluate the pitting corrosion and the sliding wear resistances of CaviTec coatings produced by high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and deposited onto a 304 stainless steel (SS). The corrosion performances in simulated seawater indicated that these coatings exhibit satisfactory corrosion resistance with regions around the inter-splats representing the preferential weak links sites for pitting corrosion initiation. CaviTec coating wear is characterized by mild delamination followed by severe abrasive wear once the hard-martensitic debris are added in the tribosystem due to the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect. Corrosion and wear results point out that the CaviTec coatings, originally developed to possess high cavitation erosion resistance, also present satisfactory corrosion resistance in seawater-like medium and interesting dry sliding wear performance, which can extend their application domain.

28 Jan 1982TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for detecting and locating faults and/or partial discharges in a gas-insulated electrical equipment, such as a bus, a cable, a substation, or a switchgear.
Abstract: A device and a method for detecting and locating faults and/or partial discharges in a gas-insulated electrical equipment, such as gas-insulated bus or cable, a gas-insulated substation or a gas-insulated switchgear. The detecting device comprises a plurality of field coupled current sensors located at given intervals inside the housing of the equipment for detecting any variation of the current flowing through the conducting element extending inside this housing. Each sensor consists of a toroidal helix pick up coil, preferably a differentiating Rogowski coil, located in an annular cavity machined in the wall of the equipment housing and extending all around the conducting element. Each cavity is connected along its entire length to the inner surface of the housing wall by a slit having opposed side walls sufficiently spaced apart to be insulated from each other. Each sensor gives a signal which is proportional to the detected variation of the current. A control circuit is connected to each of the sensors for comparing their signals and measuring the time interval between all the signals given by the sensors of a given variation current, and thereby determining where is located the fault or partial discharge having caused this given variation of current. The main advantages of this device are that it is not electrically connected to the circuit carrying the main current and it is not influenced by the voltage drop associated with the flow of current on the inside surface of the annular cavities. Moreover, the sensitivity of the device is a function of the number of turns in the pick up coil, and therefore can be very high.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dielectric performance of cable joints was investigated and the effect of surface conditions was also investigated for both new and field-aged cable joints, and it was shown that the performance at interfaces is intimately related to surface conditions, and a distinct long-term behavior was found for each type of interface in cable joints.
Abstract: Great progress has been made in developing high-quality insulating materials, in maintaining consistent manufacturing processes, and in designing cable joints for easy installation. However, little attention has been given to the interfaces in cable joints. Greases are generally used as a lubricant for installation of premolded cable joints (excluding heat-shrink and cold-shrink splices), and are therefore always found at these interfaces. Analysis of field-aged cable joints has revealed two common problems related to greases: dry and sticky interfaces causing great difficulties in power disconnection, and interfacial discharges (or surface tracking) leading to dielectric breakdown. The focus of this study is on the dielectric performance of interfaces in cable joints. Measurements of breakdown voltage and pressure were carried out at interfaces of both new and field-aged cable joints. The effect of surface conditions was also investigated. Results show that the dielectric performance at interfaces is intimately related to the surface conditions, and a distinct long-term behavior is found for each type of interface in cable joints. The significance of the results and their implications are discussed.
