Abstract: One of the most important problems faced by software developers and users is the prediction of the size of a programming system and its development effort. As an alternative to "size," one might deal with a measure of the "function" that the software is to perform. Albrecht [1] has developed a methodology to estimate the amount of the "function" the software is to perform, in terms of the data it is to use (absorb) and to generate (produce). The "function" is quantified as "function points," essentially, a weighted sum of the numbers of "inputs," "outputs,"master files," and "inquiries" provided to, or generated by, the software. This paper demonstrates the equivalence between Albrecht's external input/output data flow representative of a program (the "function points" metric) and Halstead's [2] "software science" or "software linguistics" model of a program as well as the "soft content" variation of Halstead's model suggested by Gaffney [7].

Abstract: The bonding of Si atoms at the SiO2/Si interface is determined via high-resolution core level spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. For oxides grown in pure O2, the SiO2/Si interface is found to contain Si atoms in intermediate oxidation states with a density of 1.5 ± 0.5 × 1015 cm−2. From the density and distribution of intermediate oxidation states, models of the interface structure are obtained. The interface is not abrupt, as evidenced by the non-ideal distribution of intermediate oxidation states and their high density (about 2 monolayers of Si). The finite width of the interface is explained by the bond density mismatch between SiO2 and Si. Annealing in H2 is found to influence the electrical parameters by removing the Pb centers that pin the Fermi level. The distribution of intermediate oxidation states is not affected.

Abstract: Using an atomic force microscope, we have observed atomic-scale features on the frictional force acting on a tungsten wire tip sliding on the basal plane of a graphite surface at low loads, < 10-4 N. The atomic features have the periodicity of the graphite surface and are discussed in terms of a phenomenological model for the tip motion described by the sum of a periodic tip-surface force and the spring force exerted by the wire.

Abstract: The authors' perspective of database mining as the confluence of machine learning techniques and the performance emphasis of database technology is presented. Three classes of database mining problems involving classification, associations, and sequences are described. It is argued that these problems can be uniformly viewed as requiring discovery of rules embedded in massive amounts of data. A model and some basic operations for the process of rule discovery are described. It is shown how the database mining problems considered map to this model, and how they can be solved by using the basic operations proposed. An example is given of an algorithm for classification obtained by combining the basic rule discovery operations. This algorithm is efficient in discovering classification rules and has accuracy comparable to ID3, one of the best current classifiers. >
