Abstract: This chapter examines the financial management and contracting problems associated with starting and successfully operating a business. We focus on the areas where financial management theory appears to be helpful in analysing the particular distribution, character and problems experienced by immigrant owner-managed businesses in the developed market economies of Europe and the United States. Financial management is a discipline that uses economic reasoning to develop decision models to estimate, evaluate and manage the financial consequences of corporate investment, operating and financing activities. Creating and maintaining successful exchange relationships with other contracting agents (both inside and outside the business) are central to the achievement of corporate objectives. The structure of explicit and implicit contracts, which specify the duties and allocate the risks and returns accruing to each party involved in a transaction, governs economic activity and is a major determinant of economic possibilities and financial outcomes.

TL;DR: The results suggest that knowledge is a key resource in MSP in both samples, indicating the level of planning and decision making related to building competitive operations capabilities over the long term.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to analyze manufacturing strategy process (MSP) from a knowledge‐based view (KBV) of the firm. MSP considers the ways that manufacturing organizes its resources in order to create/strengthen manufacturing‐related capabilities. In this context, managers often are under pressure to find quick answers in highly complex environments. By viewing MSP as a knowledge creation process, managers may choose a company's objectives based upon previous experiences and knowledge. MSP addresses the level of planning and decision making related to building competitive operations capabilities over the long term.Design/methodology/approach – A survey research was used to make cross‐country comparison. The constructs were empirically confirmed in both country samples, attesting to measurement invariance. The proposed model was tested in both samples and analyzed the differences between them.Findings – The results suggest that knowledge is a key resource in MSP in both samples. Resource‐based orienta...

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of environmental innovations on airlines' financial performance and operational efficiency in emerging market economies has been investigated using secondary data manually collected from 40 airline companies from the emerging market economy.
Abstract: The environmental impacts have been a growing concern in the airline industry around the world. However, few results have been derived to assess the impact of environmental innovation in the context of emerging market economies. Using secondary data manually collected from 40 airline companies from the emerging market economies, this study empirically examines the impact of environmental innovations on firms’ financial performance and operational efficiency. We classify environmental innovations into technology-based and process-based innovations. We find that both technology- and process-based environmental innovations positively influence airlines’ revenue, but only process-based environmental innovations have positive impacts on airlines’ profit. In addition, our results support a negative interaction relationship between technology- and process-based environmental innovations on airlines’ financial performance. In relation to operational efficiency, we find that only process-based environmental innovations exert a positive impact on the occupancy rate of airlines. As what is likely the first study addressing this issue in emerging economies, this paper fills an academic void by raising the issue and providing a grounded analysis. The results of this study have broad implications for both researchers and practitioners.

TL;DR: This article found that the individual-level characteristic of need for approval is related to contexting at the cultural level and to culturally valued communication outcomes, and no systematic differences in attitudes toward truth telling and promise keeping in business based on culture.
Abstract: International business transactions are commonly subject to misunderstanding with respect to truth telling and promise keeping. This paper argues that cultural differences in contexting contribute greatly to these misunderstandings. This study finds support for the hypothesis that the individual-level characteristic of need for approval is related to contexting at the cultural level and to culturally valued communication outcomes. Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. MBAs had significantly different mean scores on the social desirability scale. This study also finds no systematic differences in attitudes toward truth telling and promise keeping in business based on culture. Theory-based implications for research and business practice are discussed.

TL;DR: The studies show how the diffusion of ES throughout the organizations was an iterative, cumulative, and virtuous process over time and confirm that it is the different dimensions of business adaptation and system configuration and tailoring, that represent the authentic signature of the ES implementation experience.
Abstract: The implementation literature shows that many organizations are able to install enterprise systems (ES), in the sense that they make the system available for use, but fail in their efforts to diffuse and incorporate the system throughout the organization’s daily practices. This difficulty is not new. It is never the special characteristics of ES re-motivate an enquiry into issues of technological diffusion and the related areas of learning. This research identifies and describes the process and key actions associated with the diffusion of ES. The presentation focuses on two key case studies. The methodology utilizes in-depth case studies for constructing theory from the observed field data. The ES diffusion model presented puts use amidst a network of knowledge flows and learning episodes. This new perspective puts more emphasis on the importance of experiential learning than some accounts and reaffirms the vital role of knowledge creation and sharing. The studies also show how the diffusion of ES throughout the organizations was an iterative, cumulative, and virtuous process over time. Finally, the studies confirm that it is the different dimensions of business adaptation and system configuration and tailoring, that represent the authentic signature of the ES implementation experience.
