TL;DR: A major negative consequence of this underdeveloped and distorted market is that promoters of industrial and infrastructure projects have eschewed market negotiations for land acquisition and have favored the use of eminent domain powers as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: There are certain inherent problems with land because of its peculiar characteristics, which impede the natural emergence of a well-functioning market. The legal and regulatory framework can potentially overcome these problems. In India, despite some reform efforts, the land market continues to be highly distorted and inefficient. Land records are inaccurate, outdated, and incomprehensive. There are widespread uncertainties relating to land titles, which have hurt the market. Transaction costs are significantly high by international standards, which have discouraged formal land transactions. Initiatives which could have made the market function better have not been taken; while some regulations have been introduced which have introduced or magnified the distortions in the market. A major negative consequence of this underdeveloped and distorted market is that promoters of industrial and infrastructure projects have eschewed market negotiations for land acquisition and have favored the use of eminent domain powers. While reforms have begun in many areas, an area that has been left untouched relates to regulatory restraints on land use. The most notable has been the requirement of NAC. Because the clearance is typically given after land is transferred from one party to another, there is a significant transfer of wealth from farmers to project proponents, which has been the source of a great deal of social discontent. The elimination of this restriction on land use would go a long way towards making the land market a great deal more efficient than it is now.

TL;DR: It is proposed that attention to this nature of restoration work, and the workers' engagement with diverse forms of community cultural wealth, allows us to reflect on how technologies might (or might not) be designed to impact social and affective aspects of health.
Abstract: There has been a growing commitment across the fields of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Human-Computer Interaction for Development (HCI4D) towards investigating the design and deployment of technologies in the context of complex healthcare ecologies. We present a qualitative inquiry of one such context, as we examine the outreach practices and everyday challenges of workers at a community-based organization in Gujarat (India) that works with People Living with the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus(PLHIV). Drawing on Yosso's framework of community cultural wealth-apt for such intersectional settings-and the lens of articulation work, we describe how the workers at Vikas build and strengthen varied forms of capital to restore "old normals," or what life was like for their PLHIV clients prior to diagnoses. Finally, we propose that attention to this nature of restoration work, and the workers' engagement with diverse forms of community cultural wealth, allows us to reflect on how technologies might (or might not) be designed to impact social and affective aspects of health.

TL;DR: In this article, a study was undertaken to analyze factors affecting adoption of crop diversification as a risk management strategy in vegetable cultivation, and a logistic regression model was constructed and tested based on responses to a questionnaire from 556 vegetable growers from eight districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Abstract: Risk and uncertainty are inherent characteristics of agricultural production system; farmers are confronted with various potential risks related to production, markets, and prices that affect their financial returns and overall welfare. A study was undertaken to analyze factors affecting adoption of crop diversification as a risk management strategy in vegetable cultivation. A logistic regression model was constructed and tested based on responses to a questionnaire from 556 vegetable growers from eight districts of Uttar Pradesh. About 80% of vegetable growers adopted crop diversification and comparatively younger, socially underserved farmers with lower income are more likely to adopt diversification as a risk mitigating tool. Use of high-yielding seed, volatility in temperature, high marketed surplus ratio, availability of market demand, arrangement of organized buyers, and adoption of processing techniques are most likely to influence adoption of diversification. A better understanding of adoption of ...
