Emerging markets for GM foods: an Indian perspective on consumer understanding and the willingness to pay

Abstract: A random utility approach is used to estimate the logit equations which indicate what factors affect the likelihood of consumption of non-Genetically Modified (GM) and GM foods and whether or not consumers are willing to pay a premium for non-GM/GM foods. Ceteris paribus, as the price difference between non-GM and GM foods rises, people are more likely to consume GM foods. The likelihood of GM food consumption is higher in the middle income brackets. Consumers are willing to pay an expected premium of 19.5% and 16.12% for golden rice and GM edible oil, respectively. In the case of chicken, consumers seem to pay a very negligible premium for non-GM-fed chicken. Overall, it appears that GM foods may be acceptable in the Indian market. However, basic awareness about GM foods may have to be created among the consumers through government ministries, consumer interest groups and biotechnology food crop companies.

When Not Knowing is a Virtue: A Business Ethics Perspective

Abstract: How leaders and managers respond to not knowing is highly relevant given the complex, ambiguous, and chaotic business environment of the twenty-first century. Drawing on the literature from a variety of disciplines, the paper explores the dominant, unfavorable conceptualization of not knowing. The authors present some potential ethical implications of a negative view of not knowing and suggest how organizations would benefit from identifying any unhelpful aspects of the culture that may encourage unethical, undesirable, and/or hasty actions in situations of not knowing. The paper specifically illustrates how patience, courage, honesty, integrity, and humility are integral to negative capability in the contexts of not knowing. Finally, the paper calls for deeper inquiry into the role of virtue ethics in preparing managers and leaders for not knowing and urges organizations to embrace negative capability in not knowing rather than engaging in damaging delusion.

A hybrid modelling approach to the design of an AGV-based material handling system for an FMS

Abstract: The problem of organizing and controlling the material handling activity in an AGV-based material handling system for a flexible manufacturing system involves several decisions such as the number of vehicles required for the system, the layout of the tracks, the dispatching rules for the vehicles and the provision of control zones and buffers. This paper demonstrates the use of a two-stage approach for solving the problem. The required number of vehicles is estimated using an analytical model in the first stage. In the next stage, the effects of AGV failures and AGV dispatching rules on the system performance are observed through simulation studies based on which the AGV dispatching rule can be chosen.
