TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the relationship between expected equity returns and the level as well as the volatility of trading activity, a proxy for liquidity, and found that the second moment of liquidity should be positively related to asset returns, provided agents care about the risk associated with fluctuations in liquidity.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the role of perceived organisational support as a mediator of the relationship between perceived situational factors and affective organisational commitment in pharmaceutical sales representatives.
Abstract: This paper examines the role of perceived organisational support as a mediator of the relationship between perceived situational factors and affective organisational commitment. Perceived situational factors examined were: procedural justice, distributive justice, communication satisfaction with supervisor, and labor–management relationship climate. Analysis of data from a sample of 185 pharmaceutical sales representatives from India indicated that perceived organisational support fully mediates the relationship between each of these perceived situational variables and affective commitment to the organisation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the significance of and various constraints to the movement of natural persons in service trade and assess the nature of liberalisation that has occurred in this mode of supply under GATS and notes the limited progress made in this regard.
Abstract: Trade in services has expanded considerably in recent years, However, numerous regulatory barriers constrain such trade, especially when it involves the temporary cross-border movement of labour, also termed, movement of natural persons. Many developing countries have the potential to export services through cross-border movement of professional, semi-skilled and unskilled labour. The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) seeks to progressively liberalise trade in services via different modes of supply, including the movement of natural persons. Under the first round of GATS negotiations, member countries have made sectoral and cross-sectoral commitments to promote trade in services for these different modes of supply. This paper discusses the significance of and various constraints to the movement of natural persons in service trade. It also assesses the nature of liberalisation that has occurred in this mode of supply under GATS and notes the limited progress made in this regard. In view of the ongoing round of GATS negotiations, it suggests ways to stregthen the overall GATS framework through greater transparency and specificity in the commitments on movement of natural persons and through the introduction of various multilateral disciplines.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between the volatility of the stock market and that of the nominal exchange rate in India using the E-Garch specification proposed by Nelson (1991).
Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between the volatility of the stock market and that of the nominal exchange rate in India. Using the E-Garch specification proposed by Nelson (1991) it addresses the question whether changes in the volatility of the stock market affects volatility in the foreign exchange market and vice versa. The model specification incorporates asymmetric effects of positive and negative returns surprises on volatility both in the same market as well as spillovers across the two markets. Empirical analysis with one of the major stock market indices supports the hypothesis of such volatility linkages while for the other index there appears to be a spillover from the foreign exchange market to the stock market but not the other way round.

TL;DR: This study indicates that this dimension of morbidity, when measured in terms of women's subjective experiences, makes a larger contribution to the burden of illness than that suggested by the DALY approach.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate women's perceptions of the overall burden of illness among a sample of women in southern India. METHODS: A community-based sample of 421 young married women in a subdistrict about 70 kilometres from Bangalore, Karnataka State, India, were interviewed monthly for one year. At each visit, information on the symptoms of all forms of illness they had experienced was elicited with the aid of a checklist. Details were obtained on the durations of episodes of illness and on health-seeking behaviour and costs. The symptoms were subsequently coded in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). FINDINGS: Reproductive ill-health accounted for half of all illness-days and for 31% of total curative health expenditure. The 1990 Global Burden of Disease study estimated that 27.4% of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost in Indian women aged 15-44 years were attributable to reproductive ill-health. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that this dimension of morbidity, when measured in terms of women's subjective experiences, makes a larger contribution to the burden of illness than that suggested by the DALY approach. This lends justification to the high priority attached to reproductive ill-health in India.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present results of an exploratory field study carried out over nine industry segments and explore the implications of the existence of dominant community groups for the relationships that exist between the trade channels and other components of the value chain with whom they interact.
Abstract: The process of liberalisation of the Indian economy and efforts to integrate it with the global economic set up has led to a lot of changes in the way business is being organised and conducted. One of the sectors of the economy which has seen important, if not actually dramatic change in the past decade has been the trading segment. Lot of companies including multinationals are trying to introduce novel practices in their distribution and retail systems in order to penetrate the Indian market. But so far their efforts in this direction have not been supported by an ability to understand the community dimension with respect to the channel members for whom their community affiliation is not just a question of identity, but also one that provide strong business support. Though channel members themselves are well aware of the existence of community dominance, this issue has mostly been neglected in academic research and has in no small way contributed to lack of understanding of the Indian market situation particularly among managers with a multinational background. In this study we present results of an exploratory field study carried out over nine industry segments. Apart from probing the issue of the existence of dominant community groups in the trade channels, we also explore the implications of the existence of these groups for the relationships that exist between the trade channels and other components of the value chain with whom they interact.
