Abstract: Using a unique panel data for rural India for the periods 1999 and 2006 this paper models vulnerability to poverty. We quantify household vulnerability in rural India in 1999 and 2006, investigate the determinants of ex post poverty as well as ex ante vulnerability, assess the role of ex ante vulnerability on poverty shift during the sample periods (i.e. movement into/out of poverty) and finally, examine how the effects of the determinants of vulnerability vary at different points across the vulnerability distribution. We conclude that over time economic growth has reduced the incidence of poverty. Although chronic poverty is relatively small the high incidence of transient poverty underscores the importance of covariate and idiosyncratic shocks. Household vulnerability across the distribution of such vulnerability is also investigated. A number of factors affect such vulnerability across this distribution. Thus the paper isolates a number of characteristics of households and policy variables which can be targeted to reduce the incidence of vulnerability in rural India.

Abstract: For a new generation of mostly younger users, using social technologies has become a habit. At the same time, there has been increasing adoption of social computing technologies as collaborative tools to facilitate knowledge sharing and team interactions in work contexts. Previous research has looked into the effects of differences in prior technology use and habit strength on intentions to use and actual usage of technology. Researchers have also shown how knowledge of the capabilities of a technology, affects team interactions and usage of the technology in virtual teams. Hence to understand the impact of collaborative technology usage on team interactions, it is important to consider both the employees' knowledge of the capabilities of the technology as well as his/her prior experiences or habits with the technology. Considering these observations, and the ubiquity of global virtual teams, this paper proposes to conduct an empirical field study to find out the effects of employees prior usage of social media on their social media usage and team interactions within a virtual team setting.

Abstract: We describe an algorithm for minimizing convex, not necessarily smooth, functions of several variables, based on a descent direction finding procedure that inherits some characteristics both of standard bundle method and of Wolfe’s conjugate subgradient method. This is obtained by allowing appropriate upward shifting of the affine approximations of the objective function which contribute to the classic definition of the cutting plane function. The algorithm embeds a proximity control strategy. Finite termination is proved at a point satisfying an approximate optimality condition and some numerical results are provided.
