TL;DR: This work attempts to provide a customer-centric model of substitution rule mining using the lens of affordance, and adopts a knowledge-based approach involving a dynamic ontology wherein objects are positioned based on the affordances they are preferred for.
Abstract: Association Rule Mining has so far focused on generating and pruning positive rules using various interestingness measures. However, there are very few studies that explore the mining process of substitution rules. These studies have incorporated a limited definition of substitution, either in statistical terms or based on manager’s static knowledge. Here we attempt to provide a customer-centric model of substitution rule mining using the lens of affordance. We adopt a knowledge-based approach involving a dynamic ontology wherein objects are positioned based on the affordances they are preferred for. This contrasts with the traditional static ontology approach that highlights manager’s static knowledge base. We develop an Expected-Actual Substitution Framework to compare relatedness between items in the static and dynamic ontologies. We present Affordance-Based Substitution (ABS) algorithm to mine substitution rules based on the proposed approach. We also come up with a novel interestingness measure that enhances the quality of our substitution rules thus leading to effective knowledge discovery. Empirical analyses are performed on a real-life supermarket dataset to show the efficacy of ABS algorithm. We compare the generated rules with those generated by another substitution rule mining algorithm from the literature. Our results show that substitution rules generated through ABS algorithm capture customer perceptions that are generally missed by alternate approaches.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the methodology for working out a multiobjective reservoir operation with conjunctive utilization of surface and groundwater, where irrigation and power were considered the two objectives for operation of the reservoir.
Abstract: The study outlines the methodology for working out a multiobjective reservoir operation with conjunctive utilization of surface and groundwater. Irrigation and power have been considered the two objectives for operation of the reservoir. The results of this study are compared with those achieved with conventional operation in the past and show that there is an increase in irrigation by 7 to 8% due to conjunctive use of surface and groundwater. The trade-off between irrigation and power has been developed and discussed. The transformation surface between three objectivesviz., power, irrigation and carry-over storage has been developed and the merits of carry-over storage have been discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the interdependence among the major stock markets of the world using the monthly data from January 1993 to September 2003, using the stock market indices of India (Sensex), Hong Kong (Hang Seng), the USA (DJIA), and the UK (FTSE-100).
Abstract: Over the past 15 years, financial markets have become increasingly global. The relationship among the equity markets of the developed and the emerging countries has been examined extensively in the literature. This paper studies the interdependence among the major stock markets of the world. Using the monthly data from January 1993 to September 2003, we examine the stock market indices of India (Sensex), Hong Kong (Hang Seng), the USA (DJIA) and the UK (FTSE-100). Co-integration technique has been employed to study the long-term linkages among the markets. We found that the equity markets of India and Hong Kong are co-integrated with the other markets whereas the markets of the USA and UK are not.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine investors' awareness, perception, understanding level and usage of credit rating through a questionnaire based sample survey covering individual as well as institutional investors, and discover a high diffusion of rating usage among all class of investors, though there is a perceptible disenchantment with reliability of ratings, propensity of subsequent downgrading and timeliness of rating surveillance.
Abstract: Credit rating, although a relatively new concept in the Indian financial market, have gained wide acceptance among investors. At the same time, casual and anecdotal evidence suggests that there are concerns among investors and regulators about the performance of rating agencies in India. This paper examines investors' awareness, perception, understanding level and usage of credit rating through a questionnaire based sample survey covering individual as well as institutional investors. We discover a high diffusion of rating usage among all class of investors, though there is a perceptible disenchantment with reliability of ratings, propensity of subsequent downgrading and timeliness of rating surveillance. The survey also reveals that the institutional investors possess superior knowledge and understanding about ratings than individual investors. Thus, the survey underlines the need for rating agencies to work on educating the common investors to propagate proper understanding and usage of credit rating.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the quality of software engineering education and find that the institutional structure has the capacity to produce a quality of engineer suited to the current needs of the marketplace.
Abstract: This report is part of a larger study to examine the role of higher education in India's success in providing globally traded services. In this report, we assess the quality of software engineering education. We find that the institutional structure has the capacity to produce a quality of engineer suited to the current needs of the marketplace. This is a remarkable achievement considering the rapid change in both job requirements and the role of private provision in higher education. While it is too early to assess whether the currently emergent needs, particularly in research, project management and entrepreneurship, will be met by the current structure, we argue that the state's role as regulator will be critical. While the state has so far demonstrated its capabilities of being an effective regulator, we argue that new regulatory capabilities will be needed of the state to address the evolving demands.
