Abstract: Speed in product development is the thin line that determines success or failure in many fast growing industries today. Strategies like set-based concurrent engineering and parallel team deployment have been used to accelerate new product introduction by successful companies like Toyota. In this paper, these two strategies are combined to investigate the impact of generating sets of alternatives using parallel teams on the revenue generated from new product development. The trade-off between cost and speed of development due to deployment of parallel teams in product development using the multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework are also explored. Quantitative models to determine the optimum number of product development teams at different stages of development have been constructed using the Gittins Index strategy. These models are tested using hypothetical data and the results show that the higher flexibility induced quality results in higher rewards, despite the higher cost of deploying multiple teams.

Abstract: The Board interlock networks for 166 Indian companies have been studied for the period 1995 to 2007. The most well connected companies and the most well connected directors have been identified from this data set. The Indian network has also been compared with the networks of other countries for which similar data is available. Apart from studying the trends in the evolution and the dynamics of change in this network, the continuity of relationships between companies during this period has been a special focus of our study. This reveals that 45 percent of all companies in our sample set have remained continuously connected for more than ten years indicating a very stable core network. Family, caste and to some extent geography seem to be the important factors that determine this inner core network. The education and background of the Directors of the inner core network have also been compared with those of the Board interlock network for 2007. Based on our empirical findings and a survey of the Board Interlock literature a research agenda is suggested. This not only tries to address the specific issues that could be studied using Board interlock data but also covers the larger issues of institutions for corporate governance in the Indian context. Two theories - transaction cost theory and evolutionary game theory - that are complementary to each other show promise for addressing problems of institution evolution and change. Both of them also depend on network theory and open system dynamic models to look at evolution and change. If these domains of knowledge can be integrated a new thrust and direction can be given towards addressing the problems of corporate governance and institutional change. The Indian corporate scene could be a promising starting point for driving such a research agenda. A brief on the origins and dynamics of the Satyam episode as seen through the Board interlock lens is also provided.

Abstract: Brand positioning is a crucial strategy to any brand’s strategy. Given the rapid development of technology and it impact on online strategies, changing lifestyles of consumers and the consumer interaction required as a part of contemporary brand strategy, there may be need for brands to synergize their positioning strategies with online positioning strategies. This would enable brands to adapt to an environment which is increasingly becoming digital. The paper after taking into consideration the published literature on brand positioning, attempts to formulate online positioning strategies using different aspects of brand positioning, price, customer interactivity and consumer community orientation. Implications for marketing managers are provided.

Abstract: It is ironic that a major emerging economy like India should have health indicators that are similar to those found in Kenya, Madagascar, and Myanmar (WHO, 2013), low-income countries with half or under half of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita (World Bank, 2014). In 2011, the country’s infant and under-5 mortality rates (at 47 and 61 per 1,000 live births) were worse than those found in all other BRICS countries and among the worst third of all 195 WHO member countries (WHO, 2013; see also Chapter 6 by Benoit et al., and Chapter 12 by Asakitikpi). The estimated maternal mortality ratio (200 per 100,000 live births) fared only marginally better. Although these rates and ratios have fallen over time, they nevertheless translate, in a population of over 1.2 billion, into thousands of preventable deaths.

Abstract: The present study outlines discursive work in a weak field mandate event. The case is a conference focussed on assistive technologies that may help persons with disabilities gain better access to educational and employment spaces in India. Findings highlight three mechanisms which underpinned event-specific discursive work – discursive clarity, alignment, and coordination. In outlining such discursive work, the present study indicates how actors, who congregate as a group without high symbolic or resource support from powerful institutional elites, attempt to influence broader processes of institutionalisation.
