Abstract: In this paper we construct a Nepal specific multidimensional poverty index using the Nepal Longitudinal Sample Survey (NLSS) for the period 1995–2010. The indicators for Nepal Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMP) have been chosen using the goals set by the Government of Nepal and the perceptions of adequacy as reported by households. In doing so this study combines multidimensional and subjective methods of measuring wellbeing. The subjective data is used to guide the choice of dimensions for the multidimensional analysis. Our findings show that Nepal has had a dramatic fall in multidimensional poverty along with the observed fall in consumption poverty in this period. Comparing the extent to which consumption poverty accurately identifies the multidimensionally poor, we find the error has reduced over time but remains large in proportion to the poverty rate implying the need for a multidimensional measure. For the different ethnic groups and regions the patterns of reduction in poverty are not homogenous and are different from those of consumption poverty with the NMP outperforming the consumption poverty in tracking targeted policy actions.

Abstract: The increasing adoption of cloud computing, social networking, mobile and big data technologies provide challenges and opportunities for both research and practice. Researchers face a deluge of data generated by social network platforms which is further exacerbated by the co-mingling of social network platforms and the emerging Internet of Everything. While the topicality of big data and social media increases, there is a lack of conceptual tools in the literature to help researchers approach, structure and codify knowledge from social media big data in diverse subject matter domains, many of whom are from nontechnical disciplines. Researchers do not have a generalpurpose scaffold to make sense of the data and the complex web of relationships between entities, social networks, social platforms and other third party databases, systems and objects. This is further complicated when spatio-temporal data is introduced. Based on practical experience of working with social media datasets and existing literature, we propose a general research framework for social media research using big data. Such a framework assists researchers in placing their contributions in an overall context, focusing their research efforts and building the body of knowledge in a given discipline area using social media data in a consistent and coherent manner.

Abstract: Mixed models incorporating spatially correlated random effects are often used for the analysis of areal data. In this setting, spatial smoothing is introduced at the second stage of a hierarchical framework, and this smoothing is often based on a latent Gaussian Markov random field. The Markov random field provides a computationally convenient framework for modeling spatial dependence; however, the Gaussian assumption underlying commonly used models can be overly restrictive in some applications. This can be a problem in the presence of outliers or discontinuities in the underlying spatial surface, and in such settings, models based on non-Gaussian spatial random effects are useful. Motivated by a study examining geographic variation in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, we develop a robust model for smoothing small-area health service utilization rates. The model incorporates non-Gaussian spatial random effects, and we develop a formulation for skew-elliptical areal spatial models. We generalize the Gaussian conditional autoregressive model to the non-Gaussian case, allowing for asymmetric skew-elliptical marginal distributions having flexible tail behavior. The resulting new models are flexible, computationally manageable, and can be implemented in the standard Bayesian software WinBUGS. We demonstrate performance of the proposed methods and comparisons with other commonly used Gaussian and non-Gaussian spatial prior formulations through simulation and analysis in our motivating application, mapping rates of revascularization for patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome in Quebec, Canada.

This article first traces the research in the area of spirituality as applied to business and in the second part, reports on the beliefs of Suresh B. Hundre, Chairman and MD of Polyhydron Pvt. Ltd, Belgaum, India, as practised in Polyhydron, a company known for its ethical management, and where the concept of “Business Ashrama” integrates spirituality into business.

Abstract: A cultural metaphor is a major phenomenon, institution, or activity in a nation with which most citizens identify cognitively or emotionally and through which it is possible to describe the national culture and its frame of reference in depth, for example, the Japanese garden (Gannon 2004). Cultural metaphors for six nations are analyzed two nations at a time. Three questionnaires based on the cultural metaphors for two nations at a time were developed so that each of the three pairs of two nations could be analyzed and compared separately. These questionnaire items were derived from the descriptions provided by Gannon (2004). Respondents were 664 college students, in accordance with Smith and Schwartz’ 1997 argument that teachers and students represent the best populations for analyzing cultural values. Results strongly support the concept of the cultural metaphor as a frame of reference.
