TL;DR: This work studies capacity-based and volume-based contracts between a financial services firm and an outsourcing vendor and ascertains that neither contract is universally preferred, but cost and revenue structures along with demand characteristics determine contract choice.
Abstract: Managing back-office operations for financial services is a challenging task because of highly volatile and dynamic demand requirements. Lack of service inventories, the inability to backlog demand and significant shortage and overage costs complicate the problem. In such situations, outsourcing all or part of the demand to third-party vendors provides a viable and cost effective option for the firm. Motivated by the remittance processing operations of a Fortune 100 company we examine the usefulness of complementing in-house staffing with different outsourcing arrangements. We study capacity-based and volume-based contracts between a financial services firm and an outsourcing vendor. We examine the impact of demand characteristics on the parameters of contract choice. Through extensive numerical analysis, we ascertain that neither contract is universally preferred, but cost and revenue structures along with demand characteristics determine contract choice.

18 Dec 2006TL;DR: For this computationally expensive multiobjective optimization problem, also relevant to design of semi-synchronous systems, a technique based on genetic algorithm, is proposed and a new greedy heuristic operator is employed to accelerate the convergence.
Abstract: Buffered clock-tree design, with cells at its leaves, are known to meet timing and skew requirements better. Clustering of flip-flops leads to reduced clock-tree wirelengths and power-efficient layouts. In this paper, the problem of clustering flip-flops in a given placement is formulated as Multi-way Equi-Partitioning of a given point set, such that (i) total area of the partition (ii) area of the largest partition and (iii) total deviation of the partitions, are minimal. For this computationally expensive multiobjective optimization problem, also relevant to design of semi-synchronous systems, a technique based on genetic algorithm, is proposed. Crossover and mutation operators specific to the k-way equipartitioning problem, have been designed and a new greedy heuristic operator is employed to accelerate the convergence. Results on data sets obtained from layouts of ISCAS89 benchmark circuit demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dialog among academic policy makers, faculty, and librarians on information literacy programs and the form of collaboration that can successfully support such initiatives is proposed, with the goal of building a knowledge society.
Abstract: Information literacy is one of the vital ingredients of a knowledge society . Borrowing from structuration theory , institutional theory , and theory of situated learning, this paper establishes the need for developing information literacy programmes that are to be integrated in the class room learning, as a compulsory activity . Such programs need strong faculty-librarian collaboration. This collaboration, however , is not without its challenges. This paper intends to begin a dialog among academic policy makers, faculty , and librarians on such programmes and the form of collaboration that can successfully support such initiatives.

TL;DR: This work has addressed the issue of inherent trade-off between location update cost and paging cost for proper location area (LA) planning and has attempted to find out an optimal LA size such that the total cost comprising of location update and paged can be minimized.
Abstract: In this work we have addressed the issue of inherent trade-off between location update cost and paging cost for proper location area (LA) planning and have attempted to find out an optimal LA size such that the total cost comprising of location update and paging can be minimized. We have formulated a constrained cost optimization problem under the known patterns of call arrival and terminal mobility. The present work is divided into two parts. First, we have tried to validate the model itself; next we have proposed an algorithm based on simulated annealing technique as a solution methodology for the hard constrained optimization problem.
