TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the role of internationally acquired knowledge and supra-firm institutional infrastructure on developing firms' innovation orientation and show that the macro-and micro-institutional context in which firms are embedded condition the effect of global resource and product market participation on indigenous innovation efforts.
Abstract: We examine the role of internationally acquired knowledge and supra-firm institutional infrastructure on developing firms' innovation orientation. Empirical results, based on a panel of 11,048 Indian manufacturing firms during the period 1990 to 2009, show that the macro- and micro-institutional context in which firms are embedded condition the effect of global resource and product market participation on indigenous innovation efforts. In particular, technology imports (accumulative learning) have a stronger effect on inducing investments in innovation when the macro-institutional development is weak and for firms that are affiliated to business groups. However, product market internationalization (assimilative learning) plays a more important role in facilitating innovation efforts as the institutional environment becomes stronger and for independent firms that do not possess the network advantages inherent in business groups.

TL;DR: Analytical models for various approaches through which a single vendor-multiple retailer system may be coordinated through VMI are developed and the conditions under which each of these approaches may be preferred are discussed.
Abstract: Vendor managed inventory (VMI) as a supply chain coordination mechanism has been gaining a lot of attention. This paper develops analytical models for various approaches through which a single vendor-multiple retailer system may be coordinated through VMI. Through detailed analysis of the parameters involved, we discuss the conditions under which each of these approaches may be preferred. We also highlight the savings that can be derived in the transportation cost in a VMI setting. Different ways of structuring the replenishment policy under VMI have been considered.Models have been developed to exploit different cost trade-offs in the supply chain.Significant cost reduction is possible across different policies.Implications of adopting different models have been analyzed.

TL;DR: It has been shown through extensive experimentation that the algorithm proposed in this paper statistically produces better results than the only heuristic existing for this class of problems in literature, even producing superior results under the combined objective of minimization of the fixed charge and mileage associated with vehicle routes.
Abstract: In this paper, a parallel clustering technique and route construction heuristic have been developed for the vehicle routing problem (VRP) with split deliveries and pickups An MILP formulation for determining the exact solution to the problem has also been included It has been shown through extensive experimentation that the algorithm proposed in this paper statistically produces better results than the only heuristic existing for this class of problems in literature We also form a basis of comparison between this class of problems and the VRP with simultaneous deliveries and pickups We note that while heuristics for simultaneous deliveries and pickups cannot be applied in situations where customers' delivery or pickup demands exceed the vehicle capacity, heuristics allowing split deliveries and pickups can, in fact, be applied in every situation, even producing superior results under the combined objective of minimization of the fixed charge and mileage associated with vehicle routes A guideline as to which heuristic could be used under what parametric conditions and objective functions, has also been provided

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that consumers' cognitive evaluations of the store and its merchandise also mediate the perceived crowding−patronage intention relationship, and demonstrate that there exists an optimal level of crowding that maximises consumers' store patronage intentions.
Abstract: Past empirical studies leave open the question of whether perceived crowding has a positive or a negative effect on shopping outcomes (Eroglu, Machleit, & Barr, 2005; Hui & Bateson, 1991). Based on the premise that shopping is a social phenomenon involving hedonic as well as utilitarian motivation, this study hypothesizes an inverted U-shaped relationship between perceived crowding and consumers' store patronage intentions. Additionally, past research considers the mediating role of emotions in the relationship between perceived crowding and shopping outcomes. In this research, the authors argue that consumers' cognitive evaluations of the store and its merchandise also mediate the perceived crowding−patronage intention relationship. Survey results of actual shoppers (n = 201) in a hypermarket in India demonstrate that there exists an optimal level of crowding that maximises consumers' store patronage intentions. The effect of perceived crowding on patronage intention is mediated by the emotional...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that conspicuous consumption may play the role of elevating one's own perception of economic well-being and hypothesize the effect to be higher for the households in the bottom of the pyramid (BOP).
