Two unique large-scale randomized trials conducted in collaboration with the state police of Rajasthan, India sought to increase police efficiency and improve interactions with the public In a sample of 162 police stations serving almost 8 million people, the first experiment tested four interventions recommended by police reform panels: limitations of arbitrary transfers, rotation of duty assignments and days off, increased community involvement, and on-duty training Field experience motivated a novel fifth intervention: “decoy” visits by field officers posing as citizens attempting to register cases, which gave constables incentives to behave more professionally Only two of these, training and decoy visits, had robust impacts The other three, which would have reduced middle managers’ autonomy, were poorly implemented and ineffective Building upon these findings, we designed a second experiment that provided explicit incentives to police officers to carry out sobriety traffic checkpoints and did not rely on middle managers Linking good performance with the promise of a transfer from the reserve barracks to a desirable police station posting, these incentives worked within existing organizational constraints and had very large effects on performance

Abstract: Codes of conduct play an important role in a corporation's effort to institutionalize ethics. The imperative of their implementation and compliance has been widely recognized by corporations across the world. Given this backdrop, a survey has been conducted in India to ascertain: (a) how many corporations have codes of conduct; ( b) whether common ethical issues/themes exist among them; (c) whether they have proper ‘ethics management systems’ in place; and (d) whether codes of conduct reflect any distinctive national character. This article reports the findings of the survey based on content analysis and offers suggestions as to how corporations can make their code an ‘ideal code’ and also scope for further research.

Abstract: Multipath routing protocols are distinguished from single-path routing by the fact that they look for and use several routes from a source to destination. Several routing schemes have been proposed in the context of mobile ad hoc networks that uses multiple paths simultaneously by splitting the information among the multitude of paths. However, the effect of route coupling in this environment can severely limit the gain offered by multipath routing strategies. Route coupling is a phenomenon of wireless medium and occurs when multiple routes are located physically close enough to interfere with each other during data communication. In this paper, we investigate the effect of directional antenna on multipath routing. We have shown that the effect of route coupling across multiple paths with directional antenna is much less compared to that with omni-directional antenna. As a result, the routing performance using multiple paths improves substantially with directional antenna compared to that with omni-directional antenna.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of volume and valence of online movie ratings on consumers’ risk perceptions and purchase intentions, as well as the moderating impact of cultural values, in four emerging Asian markets. Design/methodology/approach – Using a survey questionnaire, data was collected from 204 respondents for Study 1 and 376 respondents for Study 2 in four emerging markets (China, India, Chinese Macau, and the Philippines). The analysis was conducted using analysis of variance. Findings – Results indicate that moviegoers express higher risk perceptions and lower purchase intentions when the volume of online ratings is smaller and when the valence (average rating) is lower. These effects are enhanced for more conservative consumers, but are not influenced by consumers’ self-transcendence.
