TL;DR: The findings suggest that response inconsistencies between husband and wife appear to result primarily from wives underreporting the actual use of contraception, and that such underreporting may in turn be traced to the subordinate status of women within the family in this society in conjunction with familial and normative values which are opposed to contraception.
Abstract: Summary The reliability of responses in fertility surveys to questions on topics such as contraceptive use has long been a subject of concern. This paper explores one type of response reliability — the consistency between spouses in their responses to questions on use of contraception — using survey and case study data from a sample of rural Indian husbands and wives. The findings suggest that response inconsistencies between husband and wife appear to result primarily from wives underreporting the actual use of contraception, and that such underreporting may in turn be traced to the subordinate status of women within the family in this society in conjunction with familial and normative values which are opposed to contraception. Response inconsistencies, and the manner in which they are resolved, are shown to have important implications for both overall estimates of contraceptive prevalence as well as for household-level analyses of fertility behaviour.

Abstract: The influence of water column elasticity on the stability limits of a hydro- turbine generating unit with long pen-stock operating on an isolated load is investigated. D-decomposition method is used for deriving the stability regions including the elastic water column. It has been shown that a modified water column compensator enhances the stability regions and dynamic performance considerably.

TL;DR: In this article, Durelliet et al. show that the stress concentrations around holes in uniaxially loaded plates can be minimized by changing the hole shape itself until an optimum hole profile with constant stress values respectively on the tensile and compressive segments of the hole boundary is reached.
Abstract: Minimizing the stress concentration around holes in uniaxially loaded finite plates is an important consideration in engineering design. One method for reducing the stress concentration around a central circular hole in a uniaxially loaded plate is to introduce smaller auxiliary holes on either side of the original hole to help smooth the flow of the tensile principal-stress trajectories past the original hole. This method has been demonstrated by Heywood and systematically studied by Erickson and Riley. Erickson and Riley show that for a central-hole diameter-to-plate width ratio of 0.222, the maximum stress reduction is up to 16 percent. In recent work, Durelliet al. show that the stress concentrations around holes in uniaxially loaded plates can be minimized by changing the hole shape itself till an optimum hole profile with constant stress values respectively on the tensile and compressive segments of the hole boundary is reached. By this technique the maximum stress reduction obtained for the above case is up to 20 percent.

Abstract: Fatigue life of a component is influenced by a number of factors such as corrosion, temperatur, stress concentration, residual stress, etc. Yet another factor, namely the magnetic field, is shown to influence the fatigue life of ferromagnetic material. Some qualitative explanation is offered on the influences during fatigue process. Experimental results are presented to show the influence on the total fatigue life.

TL;DR: In this article, the thermal instability of a horizontal layer of micropolar fluid which loses heat throughout its volume at a constant rate has been considered and the influence of various micropolastic fluid parameters on the onset of convection have been analyzed.
Abstract: The thermal instability of a horizontal layer of micropolar fluid which loses heat throughout its volume at a constant rate has been considered. The influence of the various micropolar fluid parameters on the onset of convection have been analysed. It is found that heat source and heat sink have the same destabilising effect in micropolar fluid. It is observed that the horizontal dimension of the cells remains insensitive to the changes in the micropolar fluid parameters and also to the heat source parameterQ except forQ values near zero, where the change is drastic. Further, it is observed that though the vertical component of velocity and the curl of microrotation do not vanish anywhere between the two boundaries forQ=0, they vanish at a point nearer to the lower boundary even for a small change in theQ value.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new simple form for the atomic kinetic energy density functional (t ) is proposed as a sum of the Thomas-Fermi term and a radial correction term, namely, t [ p ] = (3/10) (3π 2 ) 2/3 p 5/3 - ( 1/40 )( r ·▽ p )/r 2, where the first term is the Thomas Fermi terms and p ( r ) is the Hartree-Fock atomic density.

Abstract: A semiempirical method is presented for the estimation of aerodynamic forces and moments on a steadily rotating airplane model in a spin tunnel. The approach is based on the application of strip theory to determine a part of the aerodynamic coefficient (including rotational velocity) and then estimation of increments to these coefficients because of rotational flow over the stalled airplane. The theory is applied to a light, single-engine, general aviation airplane and the results are compared with the corresponding spin tunnel rotary balance test data.

Abstract: Magnetic hysteresis technique is employed to evaluate fatigue damage in ferromagnetic specimens. The changes in the magnetic properties during fatigue loading are measured with the help of a specially fabricated hysteresis loop tracer. The measurements are taken with ac magnetizing fields in the Rayleigh region. The changes in magnetic properties are found to be related to the damage by fatigue loading.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cheap complexing medium of starch was employed for precipitating acicular ferrous oxalate, which on decomposition in nitrogen and subsequent oxidation yielded acicular γ-Fe2O3.
Abstract: Optimum conditions and experimental details for the formation of γ-Fe2O3 from goethite have been worked out. In another method, a cheap complexing medium of starch was employed for precipitating acicular ferrous oxalate, which on decomposition in nitrogen and subsequent oxidation yielded acicular γ-Fe2O3. On the basis of thermal decomposition in dry and moist nitrogen, dta, xrd, gc and thermodynamic arguments, the mechanism of decomposition was elucidated. New materials obtained by doping γ-Fe2O3 with 1–16 atomic percent magnesiu, cobalt, nickel and copper, were synthesised and characterized.

TL;DR: A modular system of efficient algorithms has been obtained, which can be adapted with low effort to a wide manifold of existing and future manipulation problems, robot configurations and hardware components (servo and sensor systems).
Abstract: The paper gives a survey of closed-loop control algorithms developed in the course of the project “very advanced industrial robots”. In line with the original objectives, a modular system of efficient algorithms has been obtained, which can be adapted with low effort to a wide manifold of existing and future manipulation problems, robot configurations and hardware components (servo and sensor systems). The basic approach to the design of a joint control algorithm which is tailored for a special manipulation problem will be provided by the inverse system principle. Because it warrants both the joint decoupling and a global system linearization, the option is obtained of introducing a controller separately for each joint which optimally tatisfies special performance requirements (e. g. time optimality, no overshoot) and hardware conditions. The efficiency of the developed algorithms for typical classes of manipulation problems will be demonstrated by investigations and practical case studies carried through at the Fraunhofer-Institute IITB.

TL;DR: The fully developed region for a two-phase jet exhibits similarity for velocity and concentration as mentioned in this paper, where a power law expression approximates the velocity distribution and the square root of this profile coincides with the concentration distribution.
Abstract: The fully developed region for a two-phase jet exhibits similarity for velocity and concentration. A power law expression approximates the velocity distribution and the square root of this profile coincides with the concentration distribution. Measurements show that particle dispersion decreases with increase in particle concentration and the gas mixing rate is lower than the particle mixing rate. The turbulent Schmidt Number remains constant at a value equal to 0.47.

Abstract: Thorium was extracted at pH 5.0 from 0.01 M malonic acid on a column of silica gel coated with Amberlite LA-1. Thorium was separated from alkali and alkaline earths, managenese, iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, tin, in binary mixtures by taking advantage of the difference in the pH of formation of malonato complexes. Thorium was separated from zirconium, uranium, scandium, molybdenum, titanium, by exploiting the difference in the stability of malonato complexes. The method was extended for the analysis of thorium in monazite.

TL;DR: This becomes a third order system under inertia load and with compressibility of oil considered, and performance parameters are defined and brought to their respective model parameters by iteratively adjusting the gains of the additional feedback loops.
Abstract: In a hydraulic system input/output relation of the control valve is nonlinear and load dependent. An adaptive control would therefore be necessary for large changes in load parameter. The paper considers a position control system. This becomes a third order system under inertia load and with compressibility of oil considered. Load pressure and integration of the load pressure are suggested as additional feedbacks. PRBS is used as the input signal and the cross-corelation technique is used for identification of the impulse response. Performance parameters are defined and then they are brought to their respective model parameters by iteratively adjusting the gains of the additional feedback loops. An 8-bit microprocessor based system has been used for identification and control. The proposal seems practical and can be economically implemented.

Abstract: A supported ruthenium catalyst on alumina prepared from Ru3(CO)12 has been studied by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The triatomic cluster is retained on the support but breaks down at 150°C. Complete elimination of the carbonyl groups requires heating at 350°C under vacuum. XPS studies show that the decomposed catalyst does not change on further reduction in H2 at 400°C. The ruthenium atoms remain trapped within the pores of the support.

Abstract: An introduction to some of the physical effects (e.g. exoemission, acoustic emission and mechanoluminescence) associated with the mechanical deformation of solids is presented. Greater emphasis has been given to exoelectron emissions. Experimental information and plausible mechanisms for exoemission have been described briefly. In particular, exoelectron emission from metals and oxide-coated metals has been discussed at some length, with the hope of generating a common interest among physicists and metallurgists.
