Abstract: Metal matrix composites made by a powder metallurgy route often exhibit clustering of the reinforcements due to geometrical reasons. The clustering tendency was studied in 2124 Al/30 v/o SiCp composites as a function of relative particle size ratio between the matrix and reinforcement particles. Dry blended composite powders, with different RPS ratios, were vacuum hot-pressed and microstructures were examined to assess the uniformity of the microstructure by measuring the local area fraction of the constituents. It was found that a decrease in RPS ratio resulted in an increase in strength as well as ductility, as a result of improved distribution of the SiCp. The improved response to the homogenisation treatment, observed in the composite with lower RPS ratio, is attributed to the smaller diffusion path length for the alloying element.

Abstract: Harvesting solar energy for energy and environmental applications is an ever-fascinating field of research. Although semiconductor photocatalysis is the potential tool for recalcitrant degradation, it still suffers from rapid recombination, inability to utilize visible light, and lower photocatalytic performance. Recently, the Z-scheme photocatalysts are becoming research hotspots for their strong redox ability, charge carrier separation, and ability to exploit visible light. This review provides insights into the fundamental mechanism, synthesis strategies, and characterization techniques of Z-scheme photocatalysts. The recent advancements in their applications in visible-light-driven pollutants degradation are also reviewed.

Abstract: A transit route network design (TRND) problem for urban bus operation involves the determination of a set of transit routes and the associated frequencies that achieve the desired objective. This can be formulated as an optimization problem of minimizing the total system cost, which is the sum of the operating cost and the generalized travel cost. A review of previous approaches to solve this problem reveals the deficiency of conventional optimization techniques and the suitability of genetic algorithm (GA) based models to handle such combinatorial optimization problems. Since GAs are computationally intensive optimization techniques, their application to large and complex problems is limited. The computational performance of a GA model can be improved by exploiting its inherent parallel nature. Accordingly, two parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) models are proposed in this study. The first is a global parallel virtual machine (PVM) parallel GA model where the fitness evaluation is done concurrently in a parallel processing environment using PVM libraries. The second is a global message passing interface (MPI) parallel GA model where an MPI environment substitutes for the PVM libraries. An existing GA model for TRND for a large city is used as a case study. These models are tested for computation time, speedup, and efficiency. From the study, it is observed that the global PVM model performed better than the other model.
