Abstract: We investigate the problem of incremental maintenance of an SQL view in the face of database updates, and show that it is possible to reduce the total time cost of view maintenance by materializing (and maintaining) additional views. We formulate the problem of determining the optimal set of additional views to materialize as an optimization problem over the space of possible view sets (which includes the empty set). The optimization problem is harder than query optimization since it has to deal with multiple view sets, updates of multiple relations, and multiple ways of maintaining each view set for each updated relation.We develop a memoing solution for the problem; the solution can be implemented using the expression DAG representation used in rule-based optimizers such as Volcano. We demonstrate that global optimization cannot, in general, be achieved by locally optimizing each materialized subview, because common subexpressions between different materialized subviews can allow nonoptimal local plans to be combined into an optimal global plan. We identify conditions on materialized subviews in the expression DAG when local optimization is possible. Finally, we suggest heuristics that can be used to efficiently determine a useful set of additional views to materialize.Our results are particularly important for the efficient checking of assertions (complex integrity constraints) in the SQL-92 standard, since the incremental checking of such integrity constraints is known to be essentially equivalent to the view maintenance problem.

Abstract: The thermodynamic route of establishing phase diagrams is a relatively recent activity, considering that till about the fifties most phase diagrams were determined by the measurement of certain physical property or quantitative microscopy using light optics or x-ray diffraction. The thermodynamic formalism used by Kaufman and Bernstein is explained and illustrated with examples of the development of hypothetical binary phase diagrams. The calculation of ternary phase diagrams can begin with the binary phase diagram data as a first approximation. However, to calculate a reasonably accurate ternary phase diagram a certain amount of ternary solution data is necessary. Various empirical equations have been proposed in the literature to express ternary thermodynamic data. Calculation of simple ternary isothermal sections is illustrated with the examples of Mo-V-W and Cd-Sn-Pb systems. The numerical techniques which involve the differentiation of thermodynamic parameters with respect to composition get more involved with the number of components becoming 3 or more. A simpler approach has been applied recently to find the minimum position on the Gibbs free energy surface.

Abstract: The thermodynamics of binding of concanavalin A (Con A) with a series of linear and branched chain oligosaccharides including certain N-linked complex type and oligomannose type carbohydrates and a fraction of quail ovalbumin containing Man7 and Man8 oligomannose chains have been determined using titration microcalorimetry. Methyl3,6-di-O-(alpha-D-mannopyranosyl)-alpha-D-mannopyranoside, a branch chain trisaccharide moiety found in all N-linked carbohydrates which possesses approximately 60-fold higher affinity than methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, exhibited a change in enthalpy of binding (delta H) of -14.4 kcal mol-1 as compared to -8.2 kcal mol-1 for the monosaccharide. This demonstrates that Con A possesses an extended binding site for the trimannoside. However, a biantennary complex type carbohydrate with terminal beta (1,2)-GlcNAc residues which binds with 3-fold higher affinity than the trimannoside possesses a delta H of only -10.6 kcal mol-1. A plot of -delta H versus -T delta S for the carbohydrates in the present study showed positive deviations in -T delta S for the complex type carbohydrate, as well as alpha (1,2)-di- and trimannosyl oligosaccharides which are part of the structures of oligomannose type carbohydrates. The relative favorable changes in binding entropies of these compounds are attributed to the presence of multiple internal and terminal residues in each molecule which can independently bind to the monosaccharide binding site of the lectin. The delta H values for the complex type carbohydrate and the alpha (1,2) mannose oligosaccharides were also approximately -2.5 kcal mol-1 greater than that of methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, indicating some extended binding site interactions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
