01 Jun 1994TL;DR: This contribution investigates local differential techniques for estimating optical flow and its derivatives based on the brightness change constraint by using the tensor calculus representation and builds the Taylor expansion of the gray-value derivatives as well as of the optical flow in a spatiotemporal neighborhood.
Abstract: This contribution investigates local differential techniques for estimating optical flow and its derivatives based on the brightness change constraint. By using the tensor calculus representation we build the Taylor expansion of the gray-value derivatives as well as of the optical flow in a spatiotemporal neighborhood. Such a formulation simplifies a unifying framework for all existing local differential approaches and allows to derive new systems of equations to estimate the optical flow and its derivatives. We also tested various optical flow estimation approaches on real image sequences recorded by a calibrated camera fixed on the arm of a robot. By moving the arm of the robot along a precisely defined trajectory we can determine the true displacement rate of scene surface elements projected into the image plane and compare it quantitatively with the results of different optical flow estimators.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a systematic study of high transverse-momentum charged-di-hadron correlations at small azimuthal pair separation Delta phi in d+Au and central Au-Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV.
Abstract: The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider presents a systematic study of high-transverse-momentum charged-di-hadron correlations at small azimuthal pair separation Delta phi in d+Au and central Au+Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV. Significant correlated yield for pairs with large longitudinal separation Delta eta is observed in central Au+Au collisions, in contrast to d+Au collisions. The associated yield distribution in Delta eta x Delta phi can be decomposed into a narrow jet-like peak at small angular separation which has a similar shape to that found in d+Au collisions, and a component that is narrow in Delta phi and depends only weakly on Delta eta, the "ridge." Using two systematically independent determinations of the background normalization and shape, finite ridge yield is found to persist for trigger p(t)>6 GeV/c, indicating that it is correlated with jet production. The transverse-momentum spectrum of hadrons comprising the ridge is found to be similar to that of bulk particle production in the measured range (2 < p(t)< 4 GeV/c).

TL;DR: In this paper, the surface of AM50 magnesium alloy using four different electrolytes containing 10.5% each of K 3PO4 and Na3PO4 in combination with either potassium or sodium hydroxides was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
Abstract: In this work coatings were developed on the surface of AM50 magnesium alloy using four different electrolytes containing 10 wt.% each of K3PO4 and Na3PO4 in combination with either potassium or sodium hydroxides. Electrolyte conductivity and breakdown voltage were measured in order to correlate the property of the coating to the nature of electrolyte. Further, the coatings were examined using scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology and cross sectional investigation, X-ray diffraction for phase determination, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for corrosion resistance evaluation. The effect of employing different ions in the electrolytes results in different surface morphologies, chemical phases and, consequently, the corrosion resistance of the coatings. The EIS results indicate the presence of porous and compact layers in the structure of the PEO coatings, whilst the overall coating resistance mainly results from the compact layer, the role of the porous layer as a barrier against corrosion is negligible. Finally, a correlation between the passive current density of the bare alloy and the corrosion resistance of the PEO coating is proposed.

TL;DR: This article outlines the components required to use virtual machine migration for dynamic resource management in the virtualized cloud environment, and presents categorization and details of migration heuristics aimed at reducing server sprawl, minimizing power consumption, balancing load across physical machines, and so on.
Abstract: Virtualization is a key concept in enabling the "computing-as-a-service" vision of cloud-based solutions. Virtual machine related features such as flexible resource provisioning, and isolation and migration of machine state have improved efficiency of resource usage and dynamic resource provisioning capabilities. Live virtual machine migration transfers "state" of a virtual machine from one physical machine to another, and can mitigate overload conditions and enables uninterrupted maintenance activities. The focus of this article is to present the details of virtual machine migration techniques and their usage toward dynamic resource management in virtualized environments. We outline the components required to use virtual machine migration for dynamic resource management in the virtualized cloud environment. We present categorization and details of migration heuristics aimed at reducing server sprawl, minimizing power consumption, balancing load across physical machines, and so on. We conclude with a discussion of open research problems in the area.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that curcumin reduces toxicity by binding to preformed oligomers and fibrils and altering their hydrophobic surface exposure, and the results suggest thatCurcumin and related polyphenolic compounds can be pursued as candidate drug targets for treatment of PD and other neurological diseases.
Abstract: In human beings, Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with the oligomerization and amyloid formation of α-synuclein (α-Syn). The polyphenolic Asian food ingredient curcumin has proven to be effective against a wide range of human diseases including cancers and neurological disorders. While curcumin has been shown to significantly reduce cell toxicity of α-Syn aggregates, its mechanism of action remains unexplored. Here, using a series of biophysical techniques, we demonstrate that curcumin reduces toxicity by binding to preformed oligomers and fibrils and altering their hydrophobic surface exposure. Further, our fluorescence and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) data indicate that curcumin does not bind to monomeric α-Syn but binds specifically to oligomeric intermediates. The degree of curcumin binding correlates with the extent of α-Syn oligomerization, suggesting that the ordered structure of protein is required for effective curcumin binding. The acceleration of aggregation by curcumin may decrease the population of toxic oligomeric intermediates of α-Syn. Collectively; our results suggest that curcumin and related polyphenolic compounds can be pursued as candidate drug targets for treatment of PD and other neurological diseases.
