Abstract: An improved nanofilm of Co3O4 has been synthesized using controlled current electrodeposition on a conducting transparent electrode for fabricating a hybrid solid state electrochromic device by combining it with Viologen. The nanoelectrochromic electrode also acts as a counterion to support redox induced color switching of Viologen in a solid state without any liquid electrolyte. A good color contrast between its yellow and blue states under different bias conditions has been observed, which leads to overall performance enhancement as quantified using device parameters such as coloration efficiency, color contrast, stability, and cycle life. The solid state device shows an improved efficiency of as high as 360 cm2/C and a switching time of as low as 500 ms. In situ spectroelectrochemical studies reveal that the bias induced redox activity of Viologen and metal oxide leads to the color change. The two constituents are not only electrochromically active materials but also simultaneous counterions for each other, thus leading to improvement in the electrochromic performance.

Abstract: This work presents the 2nd Cross-Spectrum Iris/Periocular Recognition Competition (Cross-Eyed2017). The main goal of the competition is to promote and evaluate advances in cross-spectrum iris and periocular recognition. This second edition registered an increase in the participation numbers ranging from academia to industry: five teams submitted twelve methods for the periocular task and five for the iris task. The benchmark dataset is an enlarged version of the dual-spectrum database containing both iris and periocular images synchronously captured from a distance and within a realistic indoor environment. The evaluation was performed on an undisclosed test-set. Methodology, tested algorithms, and obtained results are reported in this paper identifying the remaining challenges in path forward.

Abstract: As per the requirement of metabolism and fitness, normal cellular functions are controlled by several proteins, and their interactive molecular and signaling events at multiple levels. Protein quality control (PQC) mechanisms ensure the correct folding and proper utilization of these proteins to avoid their misfolding and aggregation. To maintain the optimum environment of complex proteome PQC system employs various E3 ubiquitin ligases for the selective degradation of aberrant proteins. Glycoprotein 78 (Gp78) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that prevents multifactorial deleterious accumulation of different misfolded proteins via endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. However, the precise role of Gp78 under stress conditions to avoid bulk misfolded aggregation is unclear, which can act as a crucial resource to establish the dynamic nature of the proteome. Present article systematically explains the detailed molecular characterization of Gp78 and also addresses its various cellular physiological functions, which could be crucial to achieving protein homeostasis. Here, we comprehensively represent the current findings of Gp78, which shows its protein quality control roles in different physiological functions and diseases; and thereby propose novel opportunities to better understand the unsolved questions for therapeutic interventions linked with different protein misfolding disorders.
