TL;DR: In this paper, the intended form of contribution by households to a public project, using NSSO, India dataset, covering 76,000 rural and 30,000 urban households, was analyzed.
Abstract: Public projects in water and sanitation sector in India are partially funded by government with users also contributing cash and labor. We estimate a multinomial logit model to analyze the intended form of contribution by households to a public project, using NSSO, India dataset, covering 76,000 rural and 30,000 urban households. After controlling for existing access to water and sanitation, we find that primary occupation of the household, ownership of assets explain the form of contribution. Worsening of the state of environment, participation in existing programs increases likelihood of contribution. Minority groups' access to CPR affects their decision to contribute.

TL;DR: An attempt was made to develop and evaluate the performance of a fixed bed adsorber column to remove endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide from the water environment using wood charcoal as an adsorbent, and showed a promising performance with more than 89% of its original efficiency even after the 3rd cycle of operation.
Abstract: In this paper an attempt was made to develop and evaluate the performance of a fixed bed adsorber (FBR) column to remove endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide from the water environment using wood charcoal as an adsorbent. The FBR column design parameters were evaluated using the column breakthrough data at different bed depths. The Bohert and Adams model was used with bed depth-service time (BDST) approach for the design of the adsorber. Similarity in service time values estimated from BDST approach and experimental curves revealed that BDST approach could be adapted for the design of this system. Desorption of the exhausted column with 10% methanol solution took 1hr with maximum desorption occurring at 0.5 hrs with a maximum endosulfan concentration of 47 mg l−1. A laboratory column study for 3 successive cycles of operation (adsorption-desorption) revealed that the column could treat 47.27 bed volumes of endosulfan-contaminated water up to breakthrough and 158.45 bed volumes up to exhaustion. TL;DR: This article explore the hypothesis that macroeconomic polices are influenced by political structure, through a systematic comparison of reform period macroeconomic policy choices and outcomes, in China and India, and find political structure did lead to specific inefficiencies in macroeconomic outcomes but macro-institutional changes exist that can improve policy.
Abstract: We explore the hypothesis that macroeconomic polices are influenced by political structure, through a systematic comparison of reform period macroeconomic policy choices and outcomes, in China and India. One decade lagged Indian reform in the context of similar economic and very different political structures offers a powerful natural experiment. Chinese low but positive real interest rates, facilitated by greater exchange rate volatility, and high infrastructure investment allowed it to outperform India in its first post reform decade. We find political structure did lead to specific inefficiencies in macroeconomic outcomes but macro-institutional changes exist that can improve policy. More openness under similar labor endowments give both countries the opportunity to commit to more effective, stable yet stimulatory, macroeconomic institutions and policies.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided a framework for analysing land regeneration programs combining financial, economic and environmental aspects as applied to a wood plantation program undertaken by a Tree Grower's Cooperative Society (TGCS) established by the National Tree Growers’ Cooperative Federation (NTGCF), Anand, India.
Abstract: This paper provides a framework for analysing land regeneration programmes combining financial, economic and environmental aspects as applied to a wood plantation programme undertaken by a Tree Grower’s Cooperative Society (TGCS) established by the National Tree Growers’ Cooperative Federation (NTGCF), Anand, India. Mallanahally TGCS, situated in the southern part of Karnataka state in India was selected and a survey was carried out. Benefit–cost ratios and internal rate of return are worked out for various situations. The paper also examines the role of cooperatives in managing plantation activities and assesses the distributional aspects of the benefits of the plantations. The survey elicited information on the villagers’ perceptions regarding benefits from and barriers to implementation of plantation programmes. It is shown here that despite apparently unequal distribution of benefits, the present arrangements preserve cooperation as each of the stakeholders derive positive benefits.
