Abstract: In the absence of growth rings it is difficult to give a precise time scale for pro- cesses associated with the re-establishment of tropical rain forest. This paper explores other methods by which a time scale may be constructed. The proportions of primary and secondary species, an index of similarity, biomass measurements, girth dimensions and gap size are all considered from sites in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data from primary, secondary and experi- mentally cleared forest sites are compared to estimate the minimum time required for various phases involved in the re-establishment of tropical rain forest after disturbance. A simple model is proposed to accommodate the data and other estimates in the literature. The model predicts a minimum period for the stablization of secondary species numbers as 60-70 years and the replacement of primary species as 150 years at which point gap formation is initiated. After approximately 220-250 years biomass stabilizes while individual trees exist for over 500 years.

Abstract: YAYUK RAHAYUNINGSIH SUHARDJONO. 1985. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 104 - 107. The study of insect fauna in the primary, secondary and swamp forest floor had been done in the Wanariset forest, East Kalimantan, during tije mid of dry season.September to October 1979. More than 18,000 specimens were collected by pit fall traps. This material consisted of 87 families belonging to 15 ordines. Based on the feeding habits of the insects caught during the study, 325% were phytophagous specks,29.07% predator-parasites, 20.93% decomposers and YIA undetermined species.The high density was shown by Entomobryidae, Sminttraridae and Fonrnkidae.

Insect community of stream ecosystem of Ketambe forest, Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh, Berita Biologi 3.(3) : 111 -115.Non-strictly seasonal study on the insect community of stream ecosystem at Ketambe forest, Gunung Leuser National Park,Aceh was undertaken from September 1980 to February 1983,with the aim of providing base line data of the local stream ecosystem. Thirty two species of benthic insects were recorded from the depth between 5--30 cm.They belong to the orders of Diptera, Odonata, Kphemeroptera, Coleoptera, Plecoptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera and Trichoptera. The number of species found was higher during the beginning of the dry than that of the rainy season (96,9% vs 59,4% of the total). Diptera and Odonata showed the highest number of species (8) among the orders, whereas Trichoptera was the lowest (one species). However, in term of frequency of occurence and abundance, the Trichoptera species, Hydropsyche sp,, was the highest, followed by Neoperla sp. (Flecoptera). There was a tendency of seasonal fluctuation in species number and life cycle in several species. Bottom structures containing pebbles, boulders of various sizes and leaf litter for shelter and feeding site, appeared to be the best habitat. Species composition or number varied with stations. However, diversity indexes among stations were more or less similar, and all of them were low.

Abstract: SRI HARTINI. 1985. The infestation pattern of arthropod parasites on rat at Purwodadi Botanical Garden. East Java. Berita Biologi 3(3) : 108-110. An investigation to find out the pattern of infestation of arthropod parasites on Rattus tiomanicus and Rattus rattus diardi was conducted in Purwodadi Botanical Garden, East Java. The parasites studied were Laelaps nutalli, Echinolaelaps echidninus (Acarina), Hoplopleura pacifica, Polyplax spinulosa (Anoplura) and Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera). It was concluded that parasite prevalence depends on habitat, age and sex of the host.The number of parasite infesting R. tiomanicus is greater than that of R.r. diardi, Adult rats have a higher prevalence rate than juveniles; likewise female adult rats are also higher than other sex and age group.
