Abstract: The outer-arc islands of western Sumatra rise during great megathrust earthquakes, due to large slip on the underlying megathrust In contrast, the islands subsided up to a few centimeters during the recent tsunamigenic earthquake of October 2010, due to slip far updip, near the trench Coral microatolls on one of the islands recorded a much larger subsidence, at least 35 cm, during an event in approximately AD 1314 We calculate a suite of slip models, slightly deeper and/or larger than the 2010 event, that are consistent with this large amount of subsidence Sea level records from older coral microatolls suggest that these events occur at least once every millennium, but likely far less frequently than their great downdip neighbors The revelation that shallow slip events are important contributors to the seismic cycle of the Mentawai segment further complicates our understanding of this subduction megathrust and our assessment of the region's exposure to seismic and tsunami hazards

Abstract: Lestari DA, Fiqa AP, Fauziah, Budiharta S. 2019. Growth evaluation of native tree species planted on post coal mining reclamation site in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 134-143. Mining activities affect environmental qualities including the loss of vegetation cover and the damages of physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. As such, regulations enacted by the Indonesian Government state a legal obligation for mining companies to carry out reclamation on post coal mining site. Reclamation is an activity carried out to organize, restore and improve of environmental quality after mining operations to enhance the highly disturbed ecosystem of mined land into ecologically usable state. Yet, there is little body of knowledge on how to monitor the effectiveness of reclamation in improving environmental quality of ex-mining land. Aims of this study are to evaluate of the growth of native tree species planted on various types of reclamation sites in a mining concession in East Kalimantan, and to analyze the most influencing factor of their growth. Growth parameters measured in this research were plant height, stem diameter and branch-free stem height of the planted species. Micro-climatic factors and diversity of understorey plants were also measured as environmental parameters. PCA (Principal Component Analysis) analysis was conducted using PAST 4.0. statistical program. The results shows that reclamation area of post coal mining in the study site which is most suitable for local plant species, especially Shorea balangeran, has a sloping terrain. PCA shows that factor having maximum influence on growth of planted species on the reclamation site is pH of soil. The higher is the soil pH (i.e. less acid), the better is the species growth because the soil conditions in the post-coal mining area tend to be acidic. This research suggests that in post coal mining reclamation using native trees two key factors to enhance growth performance of planted species are sloping terrain so as water is not inundated and soil pH so as it is not too acid.

Abstract: Streptomyces antibiotic regulatory protein (SARP) family regulators are well-known activators of antibiotic biosynthesis in streptomycetes. The respective genes occur in various types of antibiotic gene clusters encoding, e.g., for polyketides, ribosomally and non-ribosomally synthesized peptides, or β-lactam antibiotics. We found that overexpression of the SARP-type regulator gene papR2 from Streptomyces pristinaespiralis in Streptomyces lividans leads to the activation of the silent undecylprodigiosin (Red) gene cluster. The activation happens upon the inducing function of PapR2, which takes over the regulatory role of RedD, the latter of which is the intrinsic SARP regulator of Red biosynthesis in S. lividans. Due to the broad abundance of SARP genes in different antibiotic gene clusters of various actinomycetes and the uniform activating principle of the encoded regulators, we suggest that this type of regulator is especially well suited to be used as an initiator of antibiotic biosynthesis in actinomycetes. Here, we report on a SARP-guided strategy to activate antibiotic gene clusters. As a proof of principle, we present the PapR2-driven activation of the amicetin/plicacetin gene cluster in the novel Indonesian strain isolate Streptomyces sp. SHP22-7.
