Abstract: In order to manage and conserve coral reefs it is essential to understand the factors that structure reef communities. In Indonesia’s Jakarta Bay – Pulau Seribu reef complex, pronounced on-to-offshore variation in a number of variables was observed. Live coral cover, and echinoderm and fish species richness were higher in midshore sites than either in- or offshore sites. Variation in habitat structure, the abiotic environment, distance between sample sites and covariation of these factors separately explained 9.6 to 15.1% of the spatial variation in the composition of corals, echinoderms and fishes. Together, all three components explained > 50% of the variation in composition. This indicates that spatial and environmental factors influence the distribution of species across the study area and have important implications for the large-scale management of this reef ecosystem. Large scalemanagement and protection of these reefs will probably be important because the majority or reefs were in poor to very poor condition as exemplified by low (<25%) coral cover. The coral cover of some inshore reefs was particularly low (< 1%). Inshore coral assemblages tended to be composed of stress-tolerant or specialised pioneers of highly perturbed environments. There were also locally high densities of potentially destructive species such as the sea urchin Diadema setosum. Midshore sites had relatively high coral cover comprising Acropora and Montipora spp. that were rare or absent elsewhere, presumably due to their sensitivity to pollution and mechanical damage. Most of the offshore sites had relatively low live coral cover and were dominated by rapidly growing pioneers or by stress- or –sediment-tolerant species. Spatial variation in the composition of taxa is discussed in the context of past-and-ongoing disturbances, including land-based pollution, coral mining, sedimentation and destructive fishing practices.

Abstract: The Draco lineatus group is a monophyletic assemblage confined to islands within Wallacea. Nine species are recognized, including two described as new. For each species, a synonymy, diagnosis, description of squamation and color pattern, and summaries of distribution and natural history are provided. We resolve several long-standing taxonomic misconceptions including (1) proper allocation of the name Draco lineatus, (2) exclusion of D. bimaculatus and D. modigliani from the D. lineatus group, and (3) proper allocation of the names D. beccarii and D. walkeri. Unlike all previous studies, we recognize three morphologically distinct taxa (here recognized as species) on the island of Sulawesi.

Abstract: Snakehead fishes of the family Channidae are predatory freshwater teleosts from Africa and Asia comprising 38 valid species. Snakeheads are important food fishes (aquaculture, live food trade) and have been introduced widely with several species becoming highly invasive. A channid barcode library was recently assembled by Serrao and co-workers to better detect and identify potential and established invasive snakehead species outside their native range. Comparing our own recent phylogenetic results of this taxonomically confusing group with those previously reported revealed several inconsistencies that prompted us to expand and improve on previous studies. By generating 343 novel snakehead coxI sequences and combining them with an additional 434 coxI sequences from GenBank we highlight several problems with previous efforts towards the assembly of a snakehead reference barcode library. We found that 16.3% of the channid coxI sequences deposited in GenBank are based on misidentifications. With the inclusion of our own data we were, however, able to solve these cases of perpetuated taxonomic confusion. Different species delimitation approaches we employed (BIN, GMYC, and PTP) were congruent in suggesting a potentially much higher species diversity within snakeheads than currently recognized. In total, 90 BINs were recovered and within a total of 15 currently recognized species multiple BINs were identified. This higher species diversity is mostly due to either the incorporation of undescribed, narrow range, endemics from the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot or the incorporation of several widespread species characterized by deep genetic splits between geographically well-defined lineages. In the latter case, over-lumping in the past has deflated the actual species numbers. Further integrative approaches are clearly needed for providing a better taxonomic understanding of snakehead diversity, new species descriptions and taxonomic revisions of the group.

Abstract: The spatial and temporal variation in food abundance has strong effects on wildlife feeding and nutrition. This variation is exemplified by the peatland forests of Central Kalimantan, which are characterized by unpredictable fruiting fluctuations, relatively low levels of fruit availability, and low fruit periods (<3% of trees fruiting) that can last nearly a year. Challenged by these environments, large, arboreal frugivores like orangutans must periodically rely on non-preferred, lower-quality foods to meet their nutritional needs. We examined variation in nutrient intake among age-sex classes and seasons over a 7-year period at the Tuanan Orangutan Research Station in Central Kalimantan. We conducted 2,316 full-day focal follows on 62 habituated orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii). We found differences in total energy and macronutrient intake across age-sex classes, controlling for metabolic body mass. Intake of both total energy and macronutrients varied with fruit availability, and preference of dietary items increased with their nutritional quality. Foraging-related variables, such as day journey length, travel time, and feeding time, also varied among age-sex classes and with fruit availability. Our results add to the growing body of literature suggesting that great variation in foraging strategies exists among species, populations, and age-sex classes and in response to periods of resource scarcity.
